“No… I was just surprised that you’re younger than I imagined. And honestly, I didn’t expect detectives to be so good-looking these days. …By the way, have we met somewhere before?”

“No, this is our first meeting,” Kouki replied swiftly, shutting down any suspicion.

In truth, they had met at the Shutou family party the night before. It was technically, two nights ago now. But at that time, Kouki had his hair up and was dressed formally, presenting a very different image. Whether Kourogi remembered him as the ‘third son of the Shutou family’ or not was unclear. He probably didn’t. But it was unlikely Kourogi would connect that partygoer to the detective now standing before him.

“…I see,” Kourogi muttered, still sounding a bit unconvinced, just as the elevator doors opened. Kouki silently followed as Kourogi led the way. They turned two corners in the hallway, eventually stopping in front of a door at the end.

Kourogi unlocked the door with his key card and pushed it open, inserting the card into the wall holder. The room lights turned on.

“Please, come in.”

“Pardon my intrusion.”

Kourogi’s room was a corner suite. The large glass windows on two sides offered a sweeping view of the night skyline of High Midtown. But Kouki paid no attention to the view. Instead, he walked into the centre of the main room and quickly scanned the interior with sharp eyes.

Meanwhile, Kourogi, saying, “Feel free to sit wherever you like,” walked over to the bar counter. He opened the mini-fridge and took out a bottle of mineral water. “Would you like something to drink?” he asked.

“No need to trouble yourself.”

Kouki declined the offer and crossed the main room, opening the door that led to the bedroom. He stepped inside and confirmed that no one was in the bed, then slid open the door to the walk-in closet. It was mostly empty, with only a single suit hanging inside.

(…So, he’s not here.)

“Hey!”

Suddenly, a loud voice called out. Kourogi stormed into the bedroom, his face filled with anger.

“What do you think you’re doing? I don’t care if you’re a detective, you can’t just—”

Before Kourogi could finish his protest, Kouki grabbed his arm, twisting it behind his back.

“Ouch! Ow, ow!”

As Kourogi grimaced in pain, Kouki leaned in close to his ear and spoke in a low voice.

“You met a man from the Shutou family’s party, didn’t you?”

Kourogi’s eyes widened in shock. For a few moments, he stared at the detective restraining him, studying Kouki’s face closely. Then, all of a sudden, Kourogi shouted, “You’re that Alpha from the party!?”

“I’m Shutou Kouki.”

Revealing his identity, Kouki watched as Kourogi’s eyes grew wide in disbelief.

“The third son of the Shutou family… Why the hell are you a detective…?”

“That’s none of your concern. Just talk. Where is he now?”

“I-I don’t know… I haven’t seen him!”

Kourogi tried to deny it. But Kouki’s eyebrows furrowed slightly.

“Do you really think you can lie your way out of this?”

Kouki leaned in closer, his voice cold and threatening, as he glared down at Kourogi from a slight angle.

“If you don’t confess now, I’ll make sure you lose everything—your power as a company president, your reputation, and any chance of ever climbing back up again. If you’re an Alpha, you should know the Shutou family’s influence can do that with ease.”

The menace in Kouki’s expression and tone made it clear this wasn’t a bluff. Kourogi’s face rapidly turned pale.

“F-Fine, I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”

“Then hurry up.”

Without changing his expression, Kouki reached into his pocket with his free hand and activated the voice memo app on his phone.

“…He’s at a secret club… in the VIP lounge. He said he was in need of money, so I introduced him to a high-paying job.”

“What kind of job?”

“He’s working as a host for a party of Alphas.”

“And what kind of Alphas are they?”

“They’re scumbags—the son of a TV executive, an advertising agency’s executive, and the son of a chain of cosmetic surgery clinics. They’ve been childhood friends since kindergarten. And they’ve already done it all. They’re always looking for something new and exciting.”

“You’ve been supplying those bored Alphas with ‘gifts’ in exchange for getting your company’s talents cast in their projects, haven’t you?”

“…Yeah, that’s right. Alpha parents are soft on their sons, their own blood.”

Kourogi’s expression suggested he was hinting that the Shutou family was no different. Kouki’s temple twitched. And he twisted Kourogi’s arm even more.

“Ow, ow! It hurts! It hurts!”

“Aya was one of the ‘gifts,’ wasn’t she?”

“…O-One of the three guys saw her gravure photos and liked her. He insisted on having a drinking party with her. Aya wasn’t the type to take on those jobs. So I refused. But they kept pressuring me…”

“You ordered her manager to trick her into thinking she was a stand-in, forcing her to go to that party. You knew exactly what would happen to her—those men would devour her. Yet, you sent her anyway.”

At Kouki’s restrained but cutting accusation, Kourogi’s face twisted in guilt.

“…I couldn’t refuse. They threatened to blacklist Mizuki Andou if I didn’t comply. She’s our top star. Between Mizuki and Aya… I had no choice but to choose Mizuki.”

“…………”

Kouki ground his teeth in frustration upon hearing that Aya had been sacrificed to protect Mizuki.

The image of the two girls, who had been as close as sisters, flashed through his mind.

If Aya were still alive, would she have said, “I’m glad I could protect Mizuki”…?

(No, she wouldn’t.)

He couldn’t tell Mizuki the truth.

This brutal reality was a secret Kouki would have to bury deep inside and take with him to the grave.

In any case, Kouki had obtained the testimony needed to build a case around Aya’s drugging and rape.

With that, he switched off the voice memo app.

“―――Let’s get back to the main point. Tell me where the secret club is.”

“…”

Kourogi fell silent, as if making a last-ditch effort to resist. Kouki grabbed him roughly and shook him.

“Talk!!”
