Hearing Kouki’s exclamation, Amane also put out his cigarette in the ashtray and picked up his mug to drink the coffee.

A silence stretched on for a while. The only sounds were the cawing of crows outside the window and the two of them sipping their coffee.

Amane picked up the still-burning cigarette from the ashtray and put it back in his mouth. As he exhaled the smoke deep from his lungs towards the ceiling fan, he thought something to himself.

Now is the time to say it. If he misses this opportunity, he may never be able to say it. And here, he would most likely regret it for the rest of his life if he didn’t.

(Don’t run away. ―――Say it properly without running away.)

Convincing himself, Amane firmly stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray and turned to face Kouki. He straightened his posture slightly.

“…Forgive me.”

Bowing his head in apology, Amane heard Kouki let out a voice of deep surprise, “Huh?”

“What’s wrong all of a sudden!?”

Slowly raising his head, Amane looked straight at Kouki’s bewildered expression.

“In this incident, I caused you a lot of trouble. Out of a strange pride, I stubbornly refused to listen to your advice and went my own way, strangling myself. There was also my arrogance. I don’t think it can be resolved simply by saying ‘all’s well that ends well’. I regret it.”

As Amane wove his words of repentance, Kouki remained frozen with an expression that seemed to say he couldn’t believe what was happening.

Amane knew it was ‘unlike him’ to apologise. But still, he couldn’t just run away without saying anything.

He thought he shouldn’t do that.

“And yet, you came to rescue me… I’m grateful.”

Expressing his gratitude to Kouki in words was a much higher psychological hurdle, given their past relationship, than it would be for other people. But this was a hurdle he had to overcome.

“Thank you.”

“…Honjou-san.”

Kouki’s frozen face suddenly contorted. Furrowing his eyebrows and biting his lower lip, he looked like he was about to cry, and Amane’s chest felt tight.

“I…”

Kouki unconsciously spoke.

“I… I love you…”

Having started abruptly, he couldn’t find the words to continue.

In this situation, Amane wondered what he should tell Kouki.

Hesitating and wavering, he managed to squeeze out the words.

“I trust you as a partner.”

Kouki’s shoulders trembled slightly. And then, with a half-doubtful voice, he asked, “Really?”

Staring intently at Amane’s face, he continued, “More than Odagiri-san?”

“…Huh?”

Amane was puzzled by the sudden mention of Odagiri, furrowing his eyebrows slightly.

“Why is Odagiri-san brought up here? You and that person are completely different. Even the point of your careers are different in the first place. There’s no way you two can be compared.”

Amane disagreed with Kouki. But Kouki persistently pressed on.

“Does that mean that Odagiri-san and I are on such different levels that we can’t be treated on the same footing?”

Amane couldn’t understand why the highly self-assured top alpha Kouki was saying such things.

“Odagiri-san was certainly an excellent detective who taught me the basics of investigation. He was like a benefactor to me. But… he’s no longer in this world.”

That’s why he couldn’t be compared to you, who is still alive, is what Amane wanted to say.

“Precisely because Odagiri-san is no longer in this world, he remains an eternal vacancy in your heart. I can never surpass him.”

Annoyed by the man’s gloomy comments, Amane frowned.

“What the hell?”

“I know it’s foolish. To be jealous of the person who saved my life. It’s truly ungrateful and stupid of me. But I can’t help it. Every time I see that lighter, I feel like I’m reminded of the deep bond between Odagiri-san and you, and this aching in my chest just won’t stop…”

Amane gave a disgusted look at the oil lighter placed on the cafe table, which Kouki was gazing at with a gloomy expression.

“What the hell is that… so annoying.”

“I’m just an annoying person, aren’t I? I’m a rich kid, spoiled, and a cocky brat.”

Kouki had fallen into a self-deprecating mode, and Amane, irritated, ended up scolding him.

“You’re special to me. So be more confident and stand tall!”

Realising what he had just said, Amane was startled.

(Shit.)

But it was too late to take it back. The Kouki who had been dejected like a stray dog just moments ago was now radiating a dazzling aura like the sun god Apollo. Amane clicked his tongue at the obvious change.

“Did you just say I’m ‘special’?”

Kouki approached him, emphasising each sentence.  As the distance between them was closing, Amane slowly backed away and avoided eye contact.

“Ah… that was it. A slip of tongue.”

Amane tried to play dumb. But he was soon cornered to the edge of the sofa, unable to escape Kouki’s gaze.

“You’re my special person too.”

“…Back off. Don’t you realise I’m in heat?”

“You said it, didn’t you?”

“Shut up! Just get away from me!”

“I’m so happy.”

Kouki whispered with an enraptured expression.

Amane involuntarily squinted his eyes at the dazzling celebrity up close. He was reminded of the destructive power of the alpha aura the man was exuding. Damn, this is bad for my heart.

“I get it. So just back off…”

“I’m so happy I feel like I’m going crazy!”

Kouki exclaimed joyfully and enveloped Amane in a tight embrace.

“…!”

Squeezed tightly, Amane felt an electric current run from the top of his head to the tips of his toes.

“I’ve been promoted from just a work partner to your special person. It’s the greatest reward for me.”

“You… you idiot…”

Amane twisted his body, trying to escape the embrace as the signs of resonance heat approached. But Kouki’s arms were too strong.

“No… Let me go…”

“Honjou-san, don’t run away.”

With that whispered into his ear, Amane twitched.

“Just this once… please. Let me hold you.”

The sweet, anguished plea made the back of Amane’s neck tingle. Drenched in the alpha pheromones, his head was spinning.

His breathing was ragged. His heartbeat was rapid. His back tingled. His body was hot.

Especially the area below his abdomen.

(It’s too late now…)

The switch to his heat had been triggered.

Amane could feel that Kouki’s body pressed against his was also hot. The alpha pheromones were increasing in concentration by the moment, and the area pressed against his abdomen was already surprisingly hard. And even through the fabric, Amane could feel the heat.
