The fact that Kouki was assigned to D-East Station, which oversaw the largest entertainment district, slum, and red-light district within the four downtown districts of Central City and had the highest number of crime cases, was not his decision. It was determined by higher-ups who took into account the wishes of Kouki’s parents.

Kouki’s parents wanted their son to leave the police force as soon as possible. Therefore, they persuaded the higher-ups at the National Police Agency to assign him to a low-level Police Station. They believed that confronting the harsh realities of the lower class would eventually make their son wake up and quit – a tough-love approach driven by their deep parental affection.

(But guess what? Your son, despite being pampered, is tougher than he looks. He doesn’t seem like he’ll quit so easily.)

As Amane mocked them in his mind, Kouki pulled a burger wrapped in thin paper from the paper bag he was holding and handed it over, saying, “Here you go.”

“It’s sesame bun with a grilled patty, extra lettuce and onions, no pickles, light on the mustard, and extra ketchup, just as you prefer.”

“I didn’t ask for that.”

“But I got it right, didn’t I?”

“…Hmph.”

Amane didn’t reply but simply snorted.

(This smooth talker…)

Constantly trying to act like they were the perfect partners – as if saying, “I understand everything about you without needing to be told” – this was what irritated Amane about him.

Not bothering to hide his irritation, Amane roughly grabbed the burger, unwrapped it sloppily, and took a big bite. Annoyingly, the flavour of the meat, the seasoning, the mustard, and the ketchup were all exactly to his liking. It infuriated him even more.

When a generous amount of ketchup dripped from the corner of his mouth, Kouki’s hand swiftly reached out to wipe it with a napkin. Feeling even more annoyed by being treated like a child, Amane roughly snatched the napkin from Kouki and wiped his mouth himself.

“Hey, where’s the fries and the shake?”

“I didn’t get them.”

“What?”

Kouki’s indifferent response made Amane lift one eyebrow.

“I told you to get the combo, didn’t I?”

“A hamburger and fries combo is too greasy. And the shake has way too much sugar. Did you know a single shake contains the equivalent of thirty sugar cubes? Even if you love them, living off fast food three times a day is not good for your health. After observing you these past three days, I’ve noticed that your diet is unbalanced. At the very least, make sure you get the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. You’re also not getting enough dietary fibre. If you hate vegetables, at least try drinking vegetable juice.”

“Shut up,” Amane cut off Kouki’s preachy words in his deep voice, scowling. “Just leave me alone!”

“I can’t leave you alone when I know it’s affecting your health. You’re my partner,” Kouki declared with a serious expression.

Amane clicked his tongue and Kouki raised an eyebrow slightly. “What’s with that tongue click just now?” he asked.

“We’re partners, right? I’m not mistaken about that, am I?” Kouki pressed, closing the distance between them with a stern look.

Amane leaned away from the man who was inching closer and ordered in a low voice, “Don’t come any closer.”

“……”

Kouki gasped, seemingly taken aback. He pulled his body back. “…I’m sorry,” he apologised.

“What’s got you all worked up?”

“I’m worked up because if you deny that we’re partners, my identity will collapse,” Kouki replied, his voice tinged with a hint of heartbreak.

Amane glanced at him from the corner of his eye. Kouki was glaring at the windshield, his lips pursed in a firm line. But despite his stern expression, his deeply carved profile looked somehow forlorn.

If the women in the station saw this forlorn, puppy-like expression on his face, they would definitely be in an uproar. They’ll be talking about how he triggered their maternal instincts and how they wanted to comfort him.

(Seriously, could he be any more of an attention seeker?)

Amane crumpled the burger wrapper in his hand and tossed it into the back seat. Usually, Kouki would raise his eyebrows and lecture him, “Don’t litter. Put trash in the garbage bin!” but today, he remained still, staring straight ahead.

Amane knew Kouki was frustrated with the way things were between them. He knew that Kouki was inwardly irritated by the distance that remained unbridged between them, despite everything they had done together.

After all, they were supposed to be ‘soulmates’.

(This is such a pain in the ass…!)

Amane sighed deeply and muttered, “I get it.”

“I’m saying I acknowledge that we’re partners, okay?”

Kouki reacted with a slight twitch. His eyes locked onto Amane’s with an intense, eager gaze.

“Really?”

“…”

A Top Alpha paired with a Stray Omega – was that a viable partnership or not?

Back when his boss forced the rookie on him, claiming, “It’s an order from the higher-ups” (at that time, he didn’t know Kouki was an Alpha), Amane had been adamantly opposed. Why should he have to babysit a spoiled kid who spouted nonsense about “dreaming of becoming a detective”?

After all, Amane had been producing results on his own to gain permission from his superiors to act independently.

However, after reluctantly working together and solving cases involving Stray Omegas, Amane’s thoughts began to change.

As an Alpha, Kouki had high potential to begin with. He had gone against his parents’ strong opposition to become a detective. And he was surprisingly passionate about the job and had more guts than Amane had expected. On top of that, Kouki excelled in areas where Amane was weaker.

Their compatibility wasn’t bad – No, it was actually quite good.

After considering everything, two months ago, Amane had decided that having Kouki as a partner was ‘viable’, but…

“…I’m acknowledging it,” Amane muttered, breaking off their locked gazes and looking forward in a somewhat dismissive tone.

Feeling Kouki’s intense gaze from the side, Amane grabbed the night-vision scope lying on the seat and looked through the eyepiece.

“That’s why we’re on this stakeout together, right?”

Reflected in the objective lens was an old, reinforced concrete apartment building. They had been parked for three days in a parking lot that offered a view of the second door from the left on the third floor of the five-story building – a spot that didn’t look like there’s a police surveillance vehicle at first glance. They took turns napping in the van’s back seat every three hours at night, maintaining 24-hour surveillance of their target.

*Translator’s Note: I know that most Alphas in other Omegaverse stories are normally red-flag and scummy. But Iwamoto-sensei’s Seme alphas in this series are green-flag and just my type, ya know… Sometimes you need a break from all those red-flag Semes, just saying… Not that I’m complaining anyway if I see one in a novel since we all dig that sometimes…but yeah… -K
