Eventually, the rumours would spread. But Kazusa didn’t want to be the one to tell his old classmates from medical school.

He had no friends to confide in about something this heavy.

No lover to share in his despair either…

For now, he had been prescribed three months’ worth of suppressants. But this was his very first heat. To make matters worse, he couldn’t even remember his first heat. There wasn’t an Omega close to him that he could consult with, and not knowing what would happen to his body made it impossible to carelessly go outside to blow off steam.

He could change his Beta national ID to an Omega one and reset his life so he could live as an Omega from now on.

But what meaning was there in being a version of himself that wasn’t a doctor?

(There’s no meaning. None at all…)

He regretted the fleeting moment when he had envied the Stray Omega, Serval, whom he treated the night before.

Now that he knew he was a Latent Omega, he was disgusted by his arrogance up until yesterday. He had been able to feel that way because he had been in a safe place. Back then, he had unconsciously looked down on Serval from above.

But unlike Serval, Kazusa wasn’t beautiful.

Despite being an Omega, he had neither beauty nor any special sensibility, nor did he possess any sexual allure.

Even in that aspect, he was extremely ‘rare’.

“…Kuh…”

A bitter laugh escaped from the corner of his twisted mouth. As an Omega, he had no value. He had no redeeming qualities. His value was zero.

“This is ridiculous… Absurd… Utterly absurd… ha… hahahaha.”

Once he started laughing, Kazusa couldn’t stop. Like a dam bursting, a wave of emotional incontinence surged forth.

What had the last thirty years of his life even been for? If he had known from the start that he was an Omega, he wouldn’t have wasted his time on such pointless efforts.

“This was all just a waste of time! It was all for nothing!”

He shouted at the top of his lungs. Beyond the void of emptiness, all that escaped him was a dry, hollow laugh.

“Pathetic… What an idiot! Am I stupid or what? Hahaha… hahahahahaha!”

He laughed so hard that tears started to flow. He took off his glasses, threw them on the floor, and wiped his tears with the back of his hand. But they wouldn’t stop.

As if to make up for all the tears that hadn’t come out before, they kept spilling, one after another. Eventually, sobs began to rise from deep within his throat. Kazusa covered his face with both hands.

“Ugh… ugh… ugh…”

How pathetic. Stretching beyond his means, desperately trying to make up for his shortcomings through sheer effort.

As a child, Kazusa had been frail and suffered from asthma. An elderly doctor from a small clinic in his hometown would visit him every time he had an attack, easing his suffering.

He had wanted to help someone else, just as that doctor had helped him.

That dream became clear when he was in the upper grades of elementary school. By that time, his asthma attacks had become infrequent.

From the moment he decided to become a doctor, every day had been dedicated to studying. His classmates had called him a nerd behind his back, and he had no real memories of a youthful life. After becoming a doctor, he would stay up late reading the latest medical papers, sacrificing his personal life to work selflessly, just to barely hold on to his place.

And yet—he had lost it all.

“Ugh… uoooo… uoooooo…”

He clawed at his head and let out a beast-like wail, rolling around on the floor. He pounded the floor with his clenched fists, over and over again.

“Give me back my thirty years of life… Give me back my life!”

He let out a cry of resentment and continued pounding his fists until they went numb.

What kind of punishment was this?

What had he done to deserve it? Why did he have to suffer such an unfair fate?

He had lived his life honestly and steadily, yet why did everything have to be taken away from him?

And on top of it all, there was no one for him to blame. This wasn’t anyone’s fault.

There was no one to hold a grudge against. There was no place to direct his anger—if this wasn’t despair, then what was it?

Despair, helplessness, and a sense of futility crashed over him like a tidal wave.

Ever since he entered medical school, Kazusa had done nothing but study and work to become a doctor. He couldn’t see himself doing anything else. He didn’t believe his clumsy self was capable of another job. He had no special talents or qualifications. He didn’t have the advantage of good looks either. So living as an Omega seemed impossible.

(It hurts. It hurts. It hurts.)

His chest felt like it was being crushed.

(It’s painful. Painful. Painful.)

He didn’t know what to do with the pain.

Without wiping away the tears and sweat that covered his disheveled face, Kazusa slowly stood up. He staggered to the kitchen, his steps unsteady. Opening the refrigerator, he pulled out a can of beer. He popped the tab and drank it down while standing there. He wasn’t a particular fan of alcohol, nor was he a heavy drinker. He only occasionally has a drink in the evening. But in his bottomless despair, he thought alcohol was the only thing that might offer some relief.

Soon, the alcohol started to course through his body, dulling his senses. The pain in his chest lessened just a little. But it still hurts. His heart, his body, everything throbbed with pain.

(This isn’t enough...)

“I need… more…”

After rummaging around, Kazusa found a few bottles of wine, given to him by a patient’s family as a token of gratitude when he was discharged. He uncorked one and drank directly from the bottle. Unable to swallow properly, the wine trickled down his throat, staining the front of his white shirt with red.

“Kuh… kuh…”

He didn’t care that he was choking or that his entire front was soaked. He just kept pouring the wine down his throat.

“Bwaah…”

Drinking far more than his body could handle in one go, his head swam, and he collapsed onto the floor.

“Haa… haa…”

His body was burning up. And his heart was pounding at an impossible rate.

Dilated pupils. Hyperventilation. Tachycardia. His blood alcohol level was rising rapidly, and he was at risk of acute alcohol poisoning. But that didn’t matter. If he died here, so be it. He didn’t care.

“This life… isn’t worth… anything…”

His speech slurred as he spat out the words before rolling over onto the floor. He spread out his limbs, lying in a star shape, and gazed blankly at the ceiling. He was bathed in pale moonlight. After a while, a thought crossed his mind.

(… I should just die.)

His thirty years of life had been erased, just because he was revealed to be a Latent Omega.
