With large strides, the man closed the distance between them in no time. Kazusa’s heartbeat quickened as he found himself looking up at the man from below, staring into those mismatched eyes. But this wasn’t the same racing heart he felt earlier—it was different.
(It’s him… the man from my dream.)
Kazusa’s brief enchantment with those jewel-like eyes was soon interrupted.
“I heard at the hospital earlier that you lost your medical licence.”
The words from this dreamlike man shocked Kazusa for a full second.
“Wha…?”
He was too stunned to speak at first. But then anger slowly started to rise.
How could the hospital violate confidentiality like that and share such personal information with a complete stranger?
“Who… who told you that?” Kazusa demanded.
“The nurse who treated me when I brought Serval to the ER late last night.”
The nurse in charge of last night’s ER shift was the same veteran nurse who had been present when Kazusa allegedly went into heat.
And Serval—he was the Stray Omega Kazusa had treated for a cut on his left forearm last night.
―――Can they pay for the treatment?
―――The person accompanying them said they’ll pay in cash.
Kazusa recalled the conversation with the nurse.
So this handsome man was the one accompanying Serval?
But why would that experienced, reliable nurse reveal personal information to this man?
Kazusa’s confusion only deepened. But something told him this man held the key to his missing memories. Kazusa remained silent and listened intently to his explanation.
“After you lost consciousness in the examination room, the hospital turned into a madhouse.”
Kazusa was startled by the man’s words.
So this man had been there when he lost consciousness in the examination room!?
There was no doubt now—this man was the key. Kazusa focused even more on his words.
“There was no time for me to settle the bill. I took Serval, who was starting to wake up from the anaesthesia, and we left the hospital for the time being. After getting Serval settled, I came back to settle the bill. But by then, the outer gate was already closed. I couldn’t get back in. I was worried about both the bill and your condition. But there was nothing I could do, so I had to leave.”
It was likely that the hospital had to shut down the ER unexpectedly due to some unforeseen incident. A doctor going into heat was unthinkable. They must have feared the release of pheromones into the surrounding area, which could have caused a panic.
“From then until dawn, I couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened to you. You suddenly went into heat and lost consciousness last night. But Omegas can’t become doctors, which means you weren’t an Omega until that moment last night.”
That was true. Until last night, Kazusa had been an ordinary Beta.
“There’s only one conclusion I can draw from that: you must possess a gene that changes your gender category when triggered—a so-called ‘Latent Omega.’ If that’s the case, your life may have changed dramatically in a single night. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So around two in the afternoon, when I had some free time, I returned to the hospital. By then, the hospital had returned to its usual calm state. I settled Serval’s bill first, then started looking for you. I knew your name was ‘Toomine’ from the ID card you were wearing last night, so I asked a staff member to let you know I was here. But the response I got was, ‘Toomine-Sensei no longer works here’. I asked another staff member. But I received the same answer. Still unable to give up, I waited at the hospital’s outer gate for the nurse who had been on duty last night to arrive for her shift.”
Kazusa was astonished that this man had gone to such lengths.
Why would he care about someone he just met last night? Especially since Kazusa doesn’t even remember it.
“She remembered me. Although it seemed like the hospital had told her not to say anything, she felt she couldn’t hide it from me, who was present at the scene of the heat. She told me what happened to you afterward and mentioned that you lived in the adjacent dormitory. I went to your room right after.”
Not a single coworker who lived in the same dorm had come to check on him.
His phone hadn’t rung either.
It couldn’t be helped. They must feel awkward. And Kazusa understood they were unsure how to approach him given the suddenness of everything. He’d probably hesitate too if he was in their shoes. That’s what he kept telling himself…
(In the end, the only person who came to check on me was this man, whose name I don’t even know…)
“That was just about ten minutes ago. I rang the doorbell, but there was no response. When I turned the knob, the door was unlocked. …Sorry about that. I was worried about your safety and entered the room without permission. You weren’t inside. But I found an empty wine bottle and glass on the floor, with the floor stained red and the smell of alcohol thick in the air.”
“……..”
“I had a bad feeling. I rushed out of the room immediately. The elevator I got into still reeked of alcohol. So, not much time has passed yet. Praying it wasn’t too late, I ran up the stairs to the roof. And that’s where I found you—on top of the fence.”
After finishing his explanation, leaving nothing out, the man murmured, “Glad I made it in time.” He let out a deep breath.
“…But I can’t relax just yet,” he said to himself in a low voice, before his expression shifted.
“Your heat ‘activated’ probably because of me.”
At the abrupt confession, Kazusa frowned.
“…What do you mean?”
“Last night, I replayed everything that happened to us over and over. Do you remember when I grabbed your arm? From the point where we touched, a sharp, intense tingling, like we were being shocked by a high-voltage current, ran through us. Your body temperature spiked, sweat burst from every pore, and your heart started pounding furiously…”
As if his words were a trigger, the memory, which had been a blank, began to slowly surface in Kazusa’s mind.
After the suture procedure, he called out to the patient’s companion waiting in the lobby and talked with him in the consultation room. The patient claimed it was an accident. But Kazusa suspected his laceration was caused by another person’s knife. When he pressed the male companion, the man reluctantly admitted it was a fight injury.
