“Misa called Gazelle ‘Mama.’ So, that means he gave birth to her, right?”

“That’s right. The biological father is unknown. He’s probably one of the clients from Gazelle’s time in the red-light district… A year ago, when Gazelle fled here, Misa was a child who hardly expressed emotions and never smiled.”

The mere thought of such a Misa made Kazusa’s stomach tighten.

“After giving birth to Misa, Gazelle was forced by the brothel owner to keep taking clients, and he couldn’t properly care for her. Realising the danger they were in, Gazelle took the opportunity to escape from the brothel, carrying only Misa in his arms, and fled to ‘RARE,’ pleading, ‘Please save my child…'”

Zero furrowed his eyebrows slightly, as though replaying that memory in his mind.

“Since they arrived here, Gazelle has been able to focus on raising Misa, and she’s caught up in her development. As you saw earlier, she smiles and talks just like any other child her age.”

“…I’m glad to hear that.”

Seeing Misa, who had received not only a mother’s love but also much affection from the residents here, finally able to act her age—being spoiled and saying selfish things—it truly felt like a relief.

Witnessing firsthand a case where the shelter saved a life, Kazusa could feel the true significance of the existence of ‘RARE’. He quietly glanced at the saviour of Gazelle’s family, expressing gratitude in his heart as he looked at his profile, bathed in the golden hue of the setting sun.

(Thank you for sharing Misa’s innocent smile with us.)

The current state of ‘RARE’ seems stable. But surely, there must have been countless trials and errors to get to this point. No, it’s not just something that can be spoken of in the past tense.

Even at this very moment, Zero is shouldering the heavy burden of leadership.

On those shoulders rests the lives and livelihoods of the residents—

However, Zero, as if unaffected by the endless pressure, cast a cool glance at the smartwatch on his right wrist and muttered, “I stayed longer on the first floor than I expected.”

“Well, it’s about time. Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?”

“To the underground lounge.”

(Yes!)

His spirits rose immediately. But then, right after, he felt a sense of discomfort with himself.

Just a few days ago, he had been so overwhelmed with despair that he was ready to jump to his death. Although changing environments had allowed him to put an end to his life as a doctor and move toward a new stage, wasn’t this change happening too quickly?

Involuntarily, he questioned himself.

Was he always this curious?

Looking back, as a child, he had an insatiable curiosity. Once he started wondering why or how something worked, he couldn’t stop thinking about it until he got a satisfactory answer, pestering his parents with questions. Perhaps overwhelmed by his persistence, they started giving him books. Coupled with his frail health, before he knew it, he had become a ‘bookworm’.

Naturally, his academic performance improved, and influenced by his family doctor, he pursued a career in medicine. However, once he became a doctor, his curiosity was stifled by the overwhelming demands of the job.

Had ‘that’ which had been buried deep within his heart been released when he quit being a doctor?

While analysing his own changes, he descended the long staircase with Zero.

“There are two ways to get to the basement: the elevator and the stairs. The elevator doesn’t work without a security card, so it’s for residents only. Outsiders—mainly guests—use the stairs to descend to the entrance of the lounge on the first basement level.”

At the bottom of the staircase, after making a U-turn at the landing, they were greeted by a black door, just like the one on the first floor.

“This is the entrance door to the lounge. If you don’t have a card, you press the intercom here and wait. The staff inside check your face via the intercom’s built-in camera, match it with the security system, and if there’s no issue, they’ll unlock the door.”

Whether it’s a guest or a supplier, only those registered in the security system in advance can pass this checkpoint.

“As I mentioned earlier, the lounge is members-only with reservations, and there’s a background check when registering. Members can bring guests. But if a guest causes trouble, the member will lose their membership through joint responsibility and be banned.”

“Banned…”

It felt like quite a bold policy for a business catering to customers.

“How many members are there now?”

“One hundred. There’s a capacity limit. So when someone leaves, we promote the next person on the waiting list. Right now, there are roughly three hundred people waiting.”

“Three hundred people waiting?!”

Kazusa was surprised that even without any sexual services, the bar had set such a high bar. Yet still had a waiting list of three hundred people.

For some people, Stray Omegas were clearly that much of an attraction.

“Sorry for asking a fundamental question. But why a lounge in the first place?”

Kazusa understood the need for social participation to promote independence. But he still couldn’t grasp why it had to be a lounge.

In response to Kazusa’s renewed ‘questioning habit’, Zero answered without the slightest hint of annoyance.

“Most Stray Omegas, born and raised in brothels, have not received basic education. It’s more convenient for the brothel operators that way.”

“They are made to believe that they have no choice but to stay in the brothel because they lack education and can’t work outside. Stripping them of their right to education, they are bound by shackles. It’s truly despicable.”

“Some of them can’t even read or write. At ‘RARE’, we give them the chance to relearn basic skills and teach them how to use a PC. But honestly, it’s difficult for them to work desk jobs in an office environment. After considering their suitability and aiming for a workplace where they can work without stress, we ended up choosing a lounge as the best option.”

The first notable trait of Omegas is their beauty. Especially those Stray Omegas raised in brothels, who have grown up watching high-class male escorts and high-class prostitutes. Not only are they beautiful, but they are professionals who have mastered the art of entertaining customers. They certainly have enough aptitude, and it’s easy for them to save money for the next step.

“Although it’s a service industry, sexual services are fundamentally not allowed in the lounge. Also, for those who aren’t suited for customer service, there’s the option to work in the hall or kitchen behind the scenes. Some people learn service and cooking skills here and use it as a stepping stone to becoming independent.”
