Sensing light through his eyelids, he slowly opened his eyes. The ceiling, where square plasterboard panels were neatly lined up, came into his blurry view. The embedded lights were off, so the brightness he sensed through his eyelids seemed to be natural light. Pale green curtains hung from a rail mounted on the ceiling.

He usually woke up either in the on-call nap room or his dorm room. But today, it was neither. That said, the place was familiar—he knew it well, in fact.

Normally, the one lying on this movable reclining bed would be a hospitalised patient, and he, as the attending doctor, would stand by their side to speak or conduct an examination. But now—

(…Why am I the one lying in bed today?)

The unfamiliarity of this reversed situation made him furrow his eyebrows for a second.

Since the area around the bed was surrounded by curtains, he couldn’t see the room or outside the window. However, it was bright enough with just natural light, so it was undoubtedly morning.

But why?

He stared up at the ceiling and thought. But his head felt hazy, as if shrouded in mist. He couldn’t remember how he ended up here or the events that led to it.

“Um… what happened?”

He rubbed his forehead with his fingers and desperately tried to trace his memory. He needed to go through everything, step by step.

“…Last night, I’m pretty sure…”

He remembered being called in for a second night shift this week, filling in for a resident doctor who had the flu. Since it was a relatively quiet night with fewer outpatients, he asked the nurse to wake him up if there was an emergency and took a quick nap. He ended up being woken after just an hour to attend to a patient with a laceration on their left forearm.

The patient was a Stray Omega without insurance and ID. But since they offered to pay in cash, he accepted them, sutured the wound, and monitored them for about thirty minutes until the anaesthesia wore off—

That much he could recall, but everything after that was blurry.

“Think… Remember…”

He tightly closed his eyes, sifting through the layers of overlapping memories. Suddenly, the vivid image of a beautiful face floated up in his mind.

A man with shimmering jet-black hair, exotic dark skin, and mismatched amber and ice-blue eyes—a man so beautiful, it felt like a dream.

His breathtaking beauty grew closer, and the sweet scent, like ripe fruit, became overwhelming. The irises, each a different colour, gradually heated up, and then a warm breath touched his lips…

His heart thumped loudly. And at the same time, his eyes shot open.

“When is that memory from?”

He voiced the question aloud before shaking his head vigorously.

(No. No… impossible.)

It felt oddly real. But there’s no way someone so gorgeous would try to kiss someone as unremarkable as himself. That couldn’t be reality.

It had to be a dream. Surely, a memory of a dream.

But still, dreaming about kissing (and with a man!)—could it be that he was sexually frustrated?

Now that he thought about it, he had been so busy with work lately that he hadn’t even had time for masturbation. He wasn’t particularly high in libido, so he’d neglected it due to the busyness. But he probably should’ve made it a point to take care of things at least once a month.

Reflecting on how he’d been so focused on caring for patients that he’d neglected his own ‘maintenance’, he muttered to himself, “First, I should get up.”

I should get out of bed and find someone who knows what’s going on. Since I can’t remember anything myself, I’ll have to ask someone.

He sat up, pulled the blanket aside, and swung his legs off the bed. In the series of movements that followed, he didn’t feel any dizziness or pain in any particular spot. Next, he carefully touched his head with both hands. There didn’t seem to be any subcutaneous hematomas or scalp injuries—no bumps or bruises.

He had considered the possibility that he might have fallen in some accident, hit his head, and developed temporary memory loss, but…

(It seems that’s not the case?)

This raised the question once again—why had he been lying in bed?

While glancing around, still puzzled, his eyes landed on the glasses sitting on the bedside table. He picked them up and put them on. His vision instantly cleared.

(Was the haziness in my head just because I wasn’t wearing my glasses?)

He immediately dismissed that thought. His eyesight wasn’t that bad, and even after putting the glasses on, the fog in his head still hadn’t cleared.

(Anyway, it’ll be faster to just ask someone.)

There was no point in wasting time thinking about it.

With that, he slipped on the sandals neatly placed at his feet, stood up, and grabbed his white coat, which was hooked on the IV stand. He threw it over the matching V-neck scrub top and bottoms he was wearing, and briskly pulled open the pale green curtains.

There was another bed in the room, as it seemed to be a double room. But no one was lying in it. This was the largest general hospital in the eastern district of downtown, with 200 beds, and while the rooms varied in size, they all had a similar layout. Given that he had worked here for six years, it wasn’t surprising that he couldn’t pinpoint the exact room number.

However, judging by the view outside the window, he could tell he was on an upper floor of the inpatient building. It was likely the seventh or eighth floor of the east wing.

As he narrowed his eyes against the bright sunlight streaming in, a simple question crossed his mind.

(What time is it?)

He turned his head and spotted a wall clock. The moment he saw it, he blurted out, “What?”

“Nine-twenty?”

Outpatients had already started hours ago.

“…This is bad.”

His blood ran cold. He didn’t have time to leisurely try and recall his memories!

Panicking, he searched his coat pockets but couldn’t find the familiar hospital PHS. For a moment, he considered pressing the nurse call button. But he hesitated to bother the already busy nurses during the morning rush.

Thinking it would be faster to go in person, he opened the sliding door and stepped out into the hallway. He started walking with large strides down the empty corridor. But after a few steps, he broke into a brisk pace. The hospital had a strict rule against running, but this situation called for it.
