DBAG- Chapter 2

Chi Ke Was Not Interested In The Tragic Story Of Dr. Ji

Ch. 02 Chi Ke was not interested in the tragic story of Dr. Ji

The scene where Leng Yunting and Xu Lemian meet was very cliché.

Xu Lemian was born in a county town. His father was missing, his mother depressed, his sister seriously ill, and his grandmother, the only one who could do farm work, was lame.

Even in such a difficult environment he studied hard and was admitted to a university in S City, majoring in dance. He is currently a junior studying ballet. He has been working part-time to earn tuition during college.

This synopsis has too many bugs. Chi Ke is too lazy to delve into how someone from such a family situation could still learn ballet, nor does he want to understand why such an ambitious protagonist did not go to a specialized art school that teaches dance, but instead came to S City, where every inch of land is valued in price of gold, just to study in the dance department of a multidisciplinary university.

Putting aside all the bullshit logic, in short, this hard-working protagonist worked part-time as a wine waiter at a charity dinner last summer. Because he was too good-looking, he was framed and pushed, and the wine unfortunately spilled on the domineering president’s seven-figure suit.

He raised his head in embarrassment, his tearful eyes meeting the sharp gaze of the overbearing boss——

    And thus,

A love story that shocked the whole world began to blossom from then on.

Leng Yunting heroically rescued the beauty and then launched a passionate and intense pursuit.

The reason for such love at first sight was simple.

He thought Xu Lemian looked like his well-known White-Moonlight [mfn]The First love of the male lead who is usually depicted as perfect, pure, unattainable and eternally cherished in the memory[/mfn] … actually, it was the White-Moonlight that everyone knew except Xu Lemian.

At this time, Xu Lemian doesn’t know about this yet. He thinks he has met his one true love and is currently in an ambiguous period, enjoying the breath of love.

Chi Ke remembered that in the original novel, there was a segment about a friend of the domineering boss who couldn’t bear to see the innocent little white flower being cheated, so he hinted and reminded him several times, but the little white flower not only didn’t appreciate it, but also complained to Leng Yunting, causing the domineering boss to end his friendship with his friend as well as end several of his business deals with that friend.

But that’s not the whole point.

The most important point is that, the special assistant is responsible for cleaning up the mess of those failed collaborations.

    Every time. Literally every time.

Thinking of this, Chi Ke’s expression fell even more as he stepped into the villa area.

So one should not meddle in other people’s business. He should learn from the experience of his predecessor [mfn]original owner[/mfn] and never interfere in the love between those two lunatics, so as to avoid getting into trouble in the end.

“When you go in later, don’t talk too much, don’t look around, and don’t question any of the boss’s decisions.” He stood in front of the mansion and gave a set of concise instructions to the doctor he had just found. “Even if his decision goes against the medical theory, don’t refute it. Just do as he says.”

    Doctor: “?”

The doctor’s eyes trembled, and he grabbed Chi Ke’s sleeve tightly, shouting loudly, “You, you won’t let me do anything illegal, right? You didn’t tell me anything before I came here. I’ll say it before only, I will never do business like removing a patient’s organs!!”

    “…”

It’s rightly said, that a doctor cannot treat himself. This angel in white should have asked his colleagues to do a brain CT scan earlier, or at least read fewer novels.

Chi Ke pulled out his sleeves indifferently and said, “It’s too late. Your fee has already been transferred. There is even a receipt. We are on the same boat.”

    Doctor: “?!”

The angel in white then took out his cell phone and looked at the income and expenditure records. The expression on his face switched seamlessly from horror to joy, and then within two seconds it turned back to fear and trepidation.

Such back and forth, made his face look extremely twisted.

“Why panic? You medical professionals obviously know a few lawyers.” Chi Ke consoled him while pushing open the door. “Please come in. May God bless you.”

“…Mr. Chi, if I die tonight, I’ll haunt you forever.” The doctor dramatically declared, staggering inside like a condemned man walking to the guillotine [mfn]A guillotine is a device used for execution by beheading, consisting of a heavy blade that falls between two vertical posts. It was famously used during the French Revolution.[/mfn],

    “Hello, I am…”

“You are late Assistant Chi. Is it that you ran here?”

The man on the sofa had his back to the door as he spoke in a cold voice.

He didn’t know why, but these CEOs in the novels always like to sit on the sofa with their arms folded, their backs to the door, waiting for the guests to arrive.

Chi Ke calmly looked at the back of the flat head that his grandparents loved [mfn]refers to a short, flat-top hairstyle that is traditionally favored by older generations in China[/mfn], shut the door and just stood to the side.

Sure enough, Leng Yunting hadn’t even finished speaking yet before he turned his head and frowned at the doctor, “What’s with that expression? Which hospital are you from? Who is your mentor? Where did you go to college? Who taught you to treat patients with such a mournful expression? Your name, address, background- have you reported it?”

    Doctor: “!”

He knew it! He knew it!

These wealthy tycoons love to use their employee’s families as a threat!

The doctor’s hands couldn’t help shaking slightly.

Chi Ke sighed as he watched from behind.

It is not easy to be a cannon fodder and supporting role in a domineering CEO novel. This doctor’s psychological state is too weak and probably cannot replace the position of the private doctor in the original novel.

In the original novel, apart from ‘Chi Ke’, the most diligent employee was Dr. Ji.

Despite harbouring feelings for the protagonist, he was able to walk into the lewd and erotic after-sex bedroom of the couple without changing his expression, and calmly examine the bodies of the two protagonists who had just had sex, without even a slight shaking of his hand while giving the injection.

What kind of professionalism is that?

The kind of fate only the most tragic of workers were destined for.

Chi Ke threw the Civil Code onto the side cabinet, put one hand in his pocket, stood at the entrance, and calmly reported, “Deputy Director Jin of the Department of Cardiology of the Sixth Municipal Hospital, a student of Dean He, graduated from nation’s second-ranked medical school, well-educated with a naturally sulky face.”

Hearing that, Deputy Director Jin glared at Chi Ke with surprise as well as anger.

He was surprised because he had never introduced himself to this person, still, he could say his background so accurately and angry because his naturally happy face, inherited from his mother was being slandered as a bitter face?!

But before he could explode, Chi Ke narrowed his eyes slightly, which were clearly visible through the gold-framed glasses and glanced back nonchalantly through the thin lenses in the gold wire frame.

Doctor Jin’s mind buzzed and he instantly understood the other party’s intention.

This assistant’s look is more effective than a tranquilizer. [mfn]We can interpret this as, Chi Ke’s look was enough to calm a raging person down, i.e more effective than a tranquilizer[/mfn]

In the end, he couldn’t help but take a few more glances.

This man was very young, with a good posture, straight back, broad shoulders, long and thin legs, and a simple tucked in shirt, complete with a belt, looking pretty high-end. His waist so thin that it seemed as if it could be grasped within one hand.

If he hadn’t just heard him speak, he might have mistaken him for some wealthy young businessman coming here for a deal.

As for that face, how to put it?

Let’s just say that in more than 10 years of being a surgeon, Doctor Jin had never accepted such a private house-call job—until today.

    The reason?

That ridiculously exquisite face, even more finely sculpted than an elf character in a Western fantasy game.

Forty minutes ago, this man walked into his office and as he looked up from his computer…

    There was nothing to say.

    Just number to exchange.

Just that one look, let alone being assigned to treat patients outside, even if he was asked to go to the morgue to perform the art of resurrection of the dead, he would have happily gone to buy a robe and come back to perform.

Clearing his throat, Jin forced his lips into a polite smile and faithfully played the role of a ‘bitter-faced mute doctor.’

But Leng Yunting didn’t seem to care about him. His brows were still tightly furrowed as he stared at Chi Ke without blinking.

Chi Ke neither dodged nor averted his gaze. He met Leng Yunting’s eyes calmly.

“You have a good memory. Keep up the good work. Don’t bring anyone whose background and identity you don’t know to me. Also, come faster next time and don’t dilly-dally.”

Leng Yunting nodded with satisfaction, though he still seemed displeased. “I won’t deduct your salary this time. Hurry up and bring the doctor up to treat Mianmian. My eldest brother just called me. I’ll make a call and go up later.”

Chi Ke didn’t ask why he was asked to go upstairs. Since the boss asked him to do so, he just has to do so.

He took out a pair of disposable slippers from the shoe cabinet and put them on. His steps were quick but regular, conveying efficiency and composure.

Unexpectedly, when he passed by the domineering president, he was stopped.

“Chi Ke,” Leng Yunting said as he unscrupulously looked him up and down, “You seem a little different from before.”

    Chi Ke’s eyelids twitched.

“Really?” he asked, “What do you think is different?”

“Hmm…” Leng Yunting stroked his chin and stared at him for a long time, “A little taller and thinner than before. Your face… Chi Ke, did you put on makeup today?”

This domineering second-generation CEO was a steel straight man. For him to make such a guess as wearing makeup, it seems that his face was really quite different from the original owner.

Most of the inhabitants of this world do not have much doubts, probably because the world itself mends things up.

    Chi Ke replied honestly, “No.”

Leng Yunting raised his eyebrows, “Impossible! My eyes never deceive me!”

    Chi Ke: “…”

Chi Ke: “Fine, I did some semi-permanent makeup. I’ll look like this from now on.”

“Not bad.” Hearing that, Leng Yunting nodded with satisfaction, “My, Leng Yunting’s assistant, cannot be ugly. You are finally taking this job seriously.”

Chi Ke appeared calm on the surface, but inside he was hurling curses: ‘God…’

Leng Yunting, “I approve of this attitude. This month’s salary will be doubled.”

    “?”

Chi Ke’s half-closed eyes gradually opened wide.

    God.

    A God-tier boss.

“Thank you, Mr. Leng, for your recognition.” For the first time since he came here, he curled the corners of his mouth, nodding slightly at Leng Yunting with a pleasant expression, and went upstairs.

Doctor Jin, who was stunned still beside him, closed his wide-opened mouth, followed him two to three steps behind, and asked curiously, “Mr. Chi, how do you know so much about me? Did you come here because of my reputation?”

Those answers earlier seemed detailed, but are actually very vague. However, the big boss is definitely too lazy to check them personally. This not only protects the doctor’s personal privacy, but also satisfies the boss.

Chi Ke didn’t like getting too close to people, so he calmly increased his speed a bit and kept some distance between the two of them.

He hummed in acknowledgment without denying it, “I’ve heard of your great name for a long time.”

“No wonder.” Doctor Jin was a little shy. “I knew I had a good reputation. To tell you the truth, Mr. Chi, you are lucky to have met me. I am the doctor with the best temper in our hospital!”

“That’s great,” Chi Ke knocked on the door of the bedroom on the second floor and reminded, “Doctor, it’s time to get down to business.”

“Okay.” Doctor Jin put on a smile and straightened his white coat.

He is not afraid at all now, because the employer wasn’t some shady criminal—just someone completely nuts.

    Doctors won’t argue with patients.

A weak ‘come in’ came from the other side of the door. Chi Ke pushed the door open and met the eyes of the boy leaning against the head of the bed.

Seeing them the boy whispered, “Assistant Chi, I’m sorry to have made you run so late at night.”

Chi Ke raised his eyebrows slightly.

    Yep, definitely the protagonist.

Xu Lemian’s facial features weren’t sharp, but they were symmetrical and pleasant, with soft facial lines, round eyes, thin eyebrows, a low nose bridge, cherry lips, and black pupils which sat within his slightly hooded eyelids, just as described in the book—like a little deer, instantly evoking a protective instinct in others.

There is no better phrase to summarize his looks than, ‘Pure and Innocent’.

However, Chi Ke only looked at his face for a second before he fixed his gaze on the necklace hanging around the other’s neck, memorizing its appearance.

“Boss Leng is on the phone and will be here soon.” He said, “This is Doctor Jin.”

“Doctor Jin?” Xu Lemian pouted in disappointment. “Where’s Doctor Ji?”

Chi Ke, “There’s a funeral at his home.”

“A funeral? Someone died?” Xu Lemian was extremely shocked. “Who?”

The tone of the question was a bit presumptuous, but he had to answer the boss’s wife’s question.

    Chi Ke exhaled and said slowly, “Dr. Ji’s sister-in-law’s grandmother’s sister’s nephew’s uncle’s nephew’s brother.’

    Xu Lemian: “……?”

Xu Lemian tried counting the connection on his fingers, but couldn’t sort it out, so he could only nod awkwardly at Dr. Jin, “You – cough, cough cough!”

He covered his mouth in pain, looking like he was about to faint, his cheeks red, lips chapped, pale face, and his eyes filled with water, as if he would cry at any second.

Doctor Jin hurried over to take his temperature. “Oh my god, why didn’t you tell me he was so sick before? How high is your fever… 3, 37.9 degrees?”

The doctor frowned in disbelief, and took the temperature again with the thermometer.

    “Ding~”

    [37.8] [mfn]normal body temperature is around 37.2 degrees[/mfn]

    Doctor: “……”

Chi Ke: “What happened? You can’t treat it? You said you could handle fevers.”

“I can,” the doctor said stiffly, “but …”

It’s just that he had never seen such fever at 37.8°C in his entire medical career.

This is unscientific. This child must have a hidden disease!

Doctor Jin quickly opened the medicine box and tore the syringe bag, “Let’s draw two tubes of blood first to see if there is any viral infection or inflammation.”

“Draw blood?” Xu Lemian’s face turned even paler. “Do you really need to draw blood? I… Never mind, do it. Doctor, don’t hold back. I can take it, I’m not scared.”

Doctor Jin held the needle, confused, “You… huh?”

“Mianmian.” Leng Yunting came in with a bowl of grapes and some discarded paper. He sat down beside the bed with a distressed look on his face, nearly knocking Dr. Jin to the floor.

He held Xu Lemian’s hand tenderly, “Don’t be afraid, I’ll peel some grapes for you to eat. Just close your eyes and it will be over soon. If it really hurts…just bite me.”

Xu Lemian blushed and didn’t look at him, “No need, I can do it myself.”

“Listen to me,” Leng Yunting forcefully stuffed a grape into his mouth, “Doctor, you can start now.”

Chi Ke lowered his head and winced.

Even 90s soap operas wouldn’t dare script something this dramatic, yet here they were, living it.

The doctor had never seen such a scene before. His heart almost jumped out of his throat when he was drawing blood, for he was afraid that this weak and pretty boy would bite off the flesh on the boss’ arm.

After two tubes of blood were drawn, the patient was in good spirits, but the doctor… he looked like a dried corpse with no blood or essence left.

The two of them were hugging each other on the bed, and Chi Ke was kind enough to help the doctor pack the medical box.

He bent down and accidentally glimpsed the contents of the discarded paper containing the grape skins –

[Part I: General Provisions Chapter I: Basic Provisions Article 1: In order to protect…]

It seems to have been torn out of the Civil Code.

    Chi Ke: “…”

He quickened his movements ignoring what he just saw, “Boss Leng, if there’s nothing else…”

“Yeah.” Right now, Leng Yunting’s heart and eyes were full of Xu Lemian. He waved his hand perfunctorily, “Go back. You can take care of the salary yourself.”

Unlike a housekeeper who is only responsible for the boss’ daily life, a special assistant has many diverse tasks that test his professional ability. Chi Ke has a high salary, so his responsibilities are naturally greater than those of an ordinary special assistant.

For example, helping the boss handle business secrets, arranging the boss’s private diplomatic itinerary, and providing logistics for all the boss’s relationships that are inconvenient to disclose…

Personal expenses for hiring a private doctor need to be paid through public accounts, and this kind of work requires a special assistant to issue an invoice and apply for reimbursement.

Although the work is hard, tiring and crazy, Leng Yunting gave Assistant Chi very high authority. As long as the [salary deduction] is not triggered, the salary is still quite considerable.

However, before he left, he looked at the original owner’s passbook, his income and expenditure records. Leaving aside the large expenditures, his income was as unstable as Leng Yunting’s mood, 100,000 last month and 5,000 this month.

It seems that there are too many trigger points for [wage deduction].

However, with high risks and high rewards, working under Leng Yunting is probably the fastest opportunity to make money.

In today’s era, money can solve most problems, including the original owner’s last wish.

Given the current salary, even if life will not be easy in the future, this risk is almost not enough to justify it.

Chi Ke turned and left, sighing softly.

“Assistant Chi, why are you sighing? It’s too unlucky. It will affect Mianmian’s recovery.” Leng Yunting said in a rough voice, “This month’s bonus will be cut in half!”

    Chi Ke: “?”

This is called, ‘God-tier financial manipulation’.

As they stepped out of the villa, Dr. Jin asked cautiously, “Aren’t you angry? Half of your bonus is gone just like that.”

Chi Ke’s calmness was frightening, “Wealth and honor are in the hands of God.”

Doctor Jin admired, “Assistant Chi has a good attitude.”

“The taxi has arrived.” Chi Ke didn’t want to continue chatting. After the taxi stopped, he smiled politely and said, “Doctor Jin, you have worked hard tonight. Be careful on the road.”

The fleeting smile made Dr. Jin stunned, and he accidentally hit his head when getting into the taxi.

When he came to his senses again, the man had already left.

He rubbed his head and muttered to himself, “Damn, how can a smile be that stunning?”

He had only seen two people with this level of appearance in his life.

One was Assistant Chi. The other was the hospital’s former ‘heartthrob’ who just resigned.

    …

Tomorrow is Saturday. Chi Ke looked at the original owner’s schedule and confirmed that he didn’t need to go to work on the weekend, so he was not in a hurry to go home.

After taking a short walk along the riverside, the anger in his heart over the deduction of bonus gradually subsided.

Are you kidding? How can he not be angry?

He has already imagined 99 episodes of ‘Leng Yunting’s Everyday Misfortunes’ in his mind, but he is just too lazy to show it.

Chi Ke snorted lightly, took out a brand new cell phone from his pocket, and the last bit of anger completely dissipated.

This phone was a gift from his boss.

Because he mentioned before he left that his phone was very slow so he couldn’t answer the phone in time tonight, Leng Yunting asked the housekeeper to get him an entire Apple ecosystem.

Every device was the latest model with maxed-out storage. Clearly, Leng Yunting wasn’t stingy—just plain crazy.

Since the new SIM card and bank card wouldn’t be ready until morning, so he first found a convenience store to borrow wifi, sat down in a corner, and opened the search engine.

Chi Ke was wearing very thin clothes. It was late autumn and the wind was cold and damp with rain. He only wore a shirt. His joints were stiff from the cold and his fingers hovered over the keyboard for a long time before he started typing.

    j, i, q, i, a, n.

    [Ji Qian]

Leng Yunting suddenly asked him to find a doctor this late at night. He had just arrived, so where could he find a reliable doctor?

In desperation, Chi Ke recalled scattered details about the private doctor Ji Qian in the original novel.

If he remembered correctly, Dr. Ji worked in the Sixth Hospital in this city before he opened his own private clinic, and he seemed to be in the cardiac surgery department.

The book describes the other party’s impressive academic qualifications and superb medical skills countless times, which shows that the Sixth Hospital is a very high-level hospital, and other doctors there must not be much worse.

The department is not important, as long as the person is reliable and can cure fever.

Chi Ke was in a hurry before going out. He searched from Ji Qian to the Sixth Hospital and then to Dr. Jin. He was so busy looking for Dr. Jin that he didn’t have time to take a closer look at his future colleague.

He glanced at the photo on Baidu [mfn]Baidu is a Chinese technology company best known for its search engine[/mfn] and went straight to the text.

[Ji Qian, male, 26 years old, graduated from Columbia University School of Medicine…]

    Chi Ke: “…”

This world had a way of feeling oddly divided.

The city schools in China are named by ASBC, but the cities and schools in overseas countries are so specific…

It can be seen that the original author is very cautious and is afraid that his work will be censored if he writes about controversial real-life content.

Rubbing the bridge of his nose, he kept reading.

[…After graduating with a master’s degree in 2012, he returned to China to develop his career and worked as a resident physician in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Sixth Hospital of S City. After 2026, he went abroad to study and participate in research projects…] [mfn]Isn’t the gap between 2012 and 2026 too long?[/mfn]

    Chi Ke’s gaze paused.

2026? Wasn’t that just last year? [mfn]should I keep it as 2026 only, or change it to actual last year?[/mfn]

In the original novel, did Dr. Ji ever go out again after returning to China?

Chi Ke doesn’t like dealing with overly tolerant people, and he is not interested in the tragic story of Dr. Ji. He didn’t read the relevant plot carefully, so his impression of this part is naturally vague.

He turned off his cell phone, rested his palm on the side of his face and looked out the window, staring blankly at the flashing noisy neon lights.

    It was still drizzling outside.

The original owner’s gold-rimmed glasses were of a lower power for him, making the already blurred circles of light even more blurred.

In a trance, he returned to the early morning of the day of his sudden death in his previous life. After staying up all night, he was sitting in the convenience store, watching the slowly rising sun dying the river red.

That night, there had been a company gala and a promotion dinner organized by his boss.

Back then, he had watched the sunrise, never expecting that he would disappear by sunset.

    “Sir.”

A cautious voice pulled him back from his thoughts.

Chi Ke put his hand down and looked up at the girl in work clothes, his back still straight, “Sorry, I seem to have stayed a little too long. Did I delay your closing time?”

The girl shook her head and placed a cup of hot milk in front of him, “There are still ten minutes left, and I don’t think there will be any customers. You are wearing so little, so warm yourself up.”

Chi Ke wrapped his hands around the steaming paper cup, his eyes softening, “What if an unlucky customer comes later…”

“Then I’ll say sorry on your behalf.” The girl winked at him.

“Then I’ll accept it, thank you. I wish you a happy get-off work in advance.” Chi Ke couldn’t help but laugh, thanked her again, and got up to leave the convenience store.

When the glass door opened, cold wind suddenly blew onto his face.

Chi Ke narrowed his eyes and held the last cup of milk he snatched from the next customer in one hand. He didn’t feel that cold now.

Lowering his head slightly, he walked into the pouring foggy night against the cold breeze.

However, just as he walked away, a bright light suddenly flashed behind him.

Chi Ke was not very curious and did not look back.

So, he didn’t know that the headlights of the motorcycle that had just stopped in front of the convenience store inadvertently helped him scare away two unruly stray dogs.

The unfortunate last customer arrived a little late.

“Hello.” There was a knock at the door of the convenience store. A tall and long-legged man wearing a windbreaker and boots, his hair and shoulders wet by the rain, but nowhere looking disheveled. His eyes carried a natural smile, making him seem effortlessly charming.

“A glass of pure milk,” he said.

The female clerk who had not even finished marveling about meeting two handsome guys in one night, was dumbfounded when she heard those words.

“This…” She let out an awkward laugh, “I’m sorry, the last glass of milk went to the previous customer two minutes ago.”

“Hmm?” The man raised his eyebrows in surprise, “What a coincidence?”

He was handsome, but not intimidating, and seemed easy to talk to. The clerk spread his hands and said jokingly, “You are unlucky. You should have come five minutes earlier.”

“Not necessarily.” The man’s deep, striking eyes curved slightly and he shrugged nonchalantly, “Maybe being late is also good luck.”

The clerk was unable to respond to the unexpected answer.

However, the other party had no intention of continuing to chat with her.

“What a coincidence! Maybe we can meet again next time and have a drink together.” He said with a smile, “Nothing is too late. I’ll take the last cup of coffee instead. Thank you.”….

Wait so did he graduate at 11 years old?!?!?!

  3. MillionLittlePieces says:

Normal body temperature is 36.6 degrees, usually mild cold medicine (the type that removes symptoms) should be taken only once it’s about 37.9 degrees or higher.
It’s Celsius, so it possibly might be confusing for those who use other metric systems in daily life.

  4. fluffball says:

…im convinced that Xu is probably a little in love with doc Ji. Or at least attracted to his looks. Xu is in an ambigous relationship with Leng, except he probably does not love him. Leng is after Xu, but doesn’t have feelings for him. Og!doc was in love with leng, and Xu is attracted to Ji. Convoluted doesn’t even begin to describe this lmaoo

  5. YoshiK says:

I think they meant 2016 rather than 2026. Bc if dr ji is 26 this year and 2026 was last year, then either he got his masters degree in 2012 at 11 years old or one of these dates is wrong 😅
