Chapter 7 – Paper Man 6
Su Tang blurted out the words without thinking, his heart tightening with panic. Whoa, I almost called Luo Yuan by his real name. That was close.
After waiting for what felt like an eternity with no response from Luo Yuan, Su Tang tilted his head in confusion. “Master?”
Luo Yuan’s heart raced as he stared dumbly at his phone.
[ Su Tang’s favorability +200 ]
The favorability progress bar jumped from negative to positive, settling at 25.
Having suffered so many favorability deductions before, Luo Yuan now found himself overwhelmed by this sudden affection. He suddenly understood the appeal of spending money on virtual characters. Seeing the little avatar’s beaming face, he felt no guilt about spending money—instead, he wanted to buy even more.
“Master? Master, Master!”
Luo Yuan suddenly regretted choosing this name on a whim. Pressing a hand to his forehead, he typed: “It’s fine. If you like it, that’s enough.”
Su Tang narrowed his eyes in a mischievous smile. “I like ‘Master’, but what about you? Does Master like me?”
Luo Yuan: “……”
“Do you want me to keep buying games and snacks for you?”
Su Tang’s face turned innocent and obedient. “Yes, of course.”
“Then shut up.”
Su Tang pouted. “…Okay, I’ll do whatever Master says.”
Luo Yuan wasn’t sure if it was intentional, but the constant “Master” address made him restless. He immediately searched for a way to change the name, only to discover in the help section that once a name was set, it couldn’t be changed!
Luo Yuan wanted to strangle his past self for giving such a ridiculous name.
Luo Yuan hastily said he had work to do and exited the game, forcing himself to focus on his tasks.
Meanwhile, in the small house.
Su Tang happily ate, feeling quite pleased with himself.
The system said, “Host, you’re amazing! The quest has made great progress—it’s already at 30/100!”
Su Tang’s eyes widened in confusion. “Huh? I didn’t do anything. Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”
The system replied, “Nope, that’s exactly how it is.”
Su Tang chewed on a chocolate bar, pondering cutely. “Could it be because I said I’d help him with his work? Did it move him that much? It’s possible. He’s been working tirelessly to grow the company and make it better, but his father didn’t care. Then he handed everything over to his illegitimate son Luo Chen without a word. In the end, he got nothing. That’s so tragic… He seems like a good person. I should treat him better.”
The system listened, its core buzzing with excitement. Host, go for it!
As both Su Tang and Luo Yuan’s thoughts changed, their relationship naturally grew closer.
Luo Yuan cherished the relaxed feeling he experienced when facing Su Tang, but his habitual self-discipline wouldn’t allow him to let gaming interfere with work. Thus, he began logging online during fixed break times—to harvest star grass, chat with Su Tang, and sometimes even play games together.
During one lunch break.
An assistant came to deliver Mr. Luo’s meal. As he set it down, his peripheral glance accidentally caught the computer screen, nearly causing him to lose composure from shock.
This familiar scene—these characters, this setting, this gun!
Holy shit! Mr. Luo plays PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds?!
The assistant’s jaw nearly dropped to the floor!
It was Luo Yuan’s impatient, icy glance that brought the assistant back to his senses. Shivering, he quickly turned and left, gently closing the door behind him. He rushed to his desk, grabbed his phone, and furiously typed:
“You won’t believe this—Mr. Luo plays PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds!!!”
“Haha, I don’t believe a word.”
“Put some effort into your lies! If Mr. Luo plays games, I’ll stream eating shit!”
“Shit-flavored pastries? Who’s that sick?”
“Hey, streamer guy—I’m saving this screenshot. Don’t back down now!”
“Pastries guy, I bow to no one but you! Hahaha”
“If Mr. Luo really plays, that means I might’ve killed the big boss. Wow, just thinking about it is thrilling.”
“Or maybe he’s the one who one-shotted your head.”
“Holy shit, can’t I even dream anymore? [Crying.jpg]”
While company employees secretly cursed Luo Yuan as a great demon, they couldn’t help but admire his badassery. They naturally assumed he’d be equally skilled at gaming, but…
“How did you die again?”
“Master, you’re truly pathetic. Stay behind me and don’t wander off.”
“Ugh, I can’t carry you anymore.”
Su Tang stared at the box on the ground, his heart swelling with pity that threatened to overflow.
To see someone so utterly terrible at games was a rare sight—it was downright pitiful.
Su Tang patted the box, then picked up a grenade and blew himself up, ready to join his clumsy master for the next round.
Luo Yuan watched his actions, torn between feeling touched and annoyed.
The System observed the growing closeness between Su Tang and Luo Yuan with satisfaction. “The host is brilliant,” it exclaimed excitedly. “By playing games with Luo Yuan, he’s giving him alternative ways to relax. This means he won’t feel so easily warmed by the female lead when they meet, nor will he think she’s particularly special.”
“…???” Su Tang stared blankly. “I just wanted a gaming partner, that’s all.”
Fine then.
Su Tang nodded with a squinted smile. “Right, that’s exactly what I meant. Oh, by the way, where’s the plot at?”
The System dutifully reported, “The male lead, Luo Chen, has been appointed as the branch manager with his father’s help. The female lead has already met Luo Yuan and secretly developed feelings for him. The two leads have yet to meet, but that’s coming soon.”
Su Tang rested his chin in his hand. “To prevent Luo Yuan from meeting the fate in the original plot, he must avoid any connection with the female lead. That psycho male lead’s jealousy is terrifying—he’d destroy the world just to take her down. As for wealth, I’d rather see Luo Yuan strike out on his own. Otherwise, all his hard work would just benefit others. With his talent, he could easily build his own empire outside the Luo Group.”
“However, career decisions depend on his choices. He might still care about his father. My role is simply to distract him with games, preventing him from entangling with the female lead. Without her emotional interference to cloud his judgment, Luo Yuan’s strength alone would make it impossible for the male lead to seize control of the Luo Group.”
The System approved his strategy. The mission progress showed favorable results, already at 40/100.
“Host, you’ve earned 20 more points. Want to do a ten-draw lottery?”
Su Tang answered without hesitation, “Of course I will!”
Every time he earned points, Su Tang would immediately spend them all on drawing rewards. While winning prizes was nice, the real thrill came from testing his luck and seeing if he could become a “lucky king.”
In the office, Luo Yuan received a call from Luo Father. He was surprised, as they rarely contacted each other, and when they did, it was always about work. For the past few years, Luo Yuan hadn’t even seen his father during the New Year celebrations, as the old man preferred spending the holiday with his first love and their son, treating his original family’s children as insignificant.
Luo Father spoke bluntly, “Luo Yuan, hand over the project for that eastern district land. You don’t need to worry about it anymore.”
Luo Yuan frowned slightly, immediately understanding his father’s intentions. “You want Luo Chen to take responsibility? He’s barely been working at the company. Large projects aren’t suitable for him. If something goes wrong, how will we explain it to the board?”
Luo Father’s voice turned angry. “The company is mine. I can do whatever I want. They’re just minor shareholders. Luo Yuan, you’re upset that A-Chen is taking some of your power, aren’t you? You’ve managed the company for so many years. A-Chen is your younger brother. Can’t you show a bit of understanding? Have I ever treated you poorly in all these years?”
Luo Yuan sneered inwardly. Having experienced so much disappointment, he couldn’t be bothered to argue. He found it laughable that he’d harbored even a shred of hope when answering the call. It had been less than half a year since his mother’s death, yet his father had already brought his first love into the family and doted excessively on that illegitimate child.
“Regardless, that project is impossible. Luo Chen can at most handle Ruijia.”
Father Luo’s tone turned venomous as he launched into a string of insults directed at his eldest son.
The phone call concluded predictably—in complete failure.
Staring at his phone, Luo Yuan struggled to comprehend. His father had once been a man of intelligence and reason. Why had he grown more muddled with age? While promoting Luo Chen’s advancement wasn’t inherently wrong, wasn’t this reckless haste counterproductive? Luo Yuan took no pleasure in his father’s impending downfall, but the potential catastrophic losses for the company made this course of action utterly unnecessary.
With a stormy expression, Luo Yuan pressed a finger to his temple. His intense aura made the assistant delivering documents tremble like a frightened chick—the young man delivered the papers and fled the room.
At that moment, the phone lying nearby suddenly lit up with a notification.
[ From: Game—Your Exclusive Lover ]
[ Dear Player, your lover Su Tang’s birthday is approaching. Have you prepared a gift? A small surprise will make your lover happy and increase affection points! Hurry up and check out the shop~ ]
Luo Yuan froze… Birthday?
This interruption shifted his focus, and the irritation in his heart dissipated considerably.
He opened the game, tapped into the shop, and was somewhat surprised that it hadn’t seized the opportunity to make money by enticing players to spend. Instead, it had launched a cake DIY event. By using some star grass, players could exchange it for cake ingredients and cooking instructions. For Luo Yuan, who was a big player who always harvested star grass on time, this could be said to be more than enough.
The birthday was in five days.
But just a cake, Luo Yuan felt it wasn’t enough. A cake was something eaten to celebrate a birthday, not a gift. The surprise factor wasn’t high enough either.
Luo Yuan lowered his gaze in thought, trying to think of a gift that would make Su Tang very happy when he received it, making him smile sweetly and say “Thank you, master”… Uh, this form of address, damn.
Never mind that for now. Let’s think about what Su Tang likes—junk food, games, anime… I’ve been giving him those all along. Nothing special. What else could there be? What does Su Tang really love?
Luo Yuan desperately wanted an opportunity to lavish both money and thoughtfulness on his gift. A simple present would seem insufficiently heartfelt.
Then…
Luo Yuan’s eyes fell on Su Tang’s messy room again, and he couldn’t help but tidy it up. In the process, he discovered a splendid little dress hidden in the corner of the wardrobe…
So that’s what Su Tang likes! Luo Yuan realized with a flash of insight.
He knew exactly what to give now!
Author’s Note:
Su Tang: Holy shit.
Translator’s Note:
Good day, readers! You meet me again~
Anyway, I read this story as I edit it, you know. So, I’m as confused as you when knowing they could playing PUBG together while Su Tang is just a game char also. I guess it’s a game inside a game, not uncommon, right. And it’s like we’re playing with a computer player/npc/ai but in this case the cp/npc/ai is Su Tang. But to have a shooting game inside a dating sim… it’s pretty interesting, don’t you think? Anyone playing this kind of game before? Maybe I can try, nyehehe~
