WTDWPK Chapter 18

Cool Autumn and Shattered Hopes

Although Song Yu really wanted to rebuke his mom for her lack of resolve and sternly inform her that even if he were a girl, he would never marry Fu Yuqian, he was too overjoyed to be free. Finally, he had escaped Fu Yuqian’s clutches!

Song Yu had never felt the sky so blue, the clouds so white, and even the faint smell of disinfectant was far more delightful than the fragrance of Eden’s Neon Bliss.

Nestled in his mother’s arms, Song Yu wagged his tail happily, stretched out his front paws, pressed them together into a heart shape, and meowed coquettishly, “Meow~ Mom, look at me! I made a heart for you.”

Miraculously, Song’s mom seemed to understand his gestures and immediately grasped the meaning of his actions. Her heart melted. “Oh my, Yiyi is so sweet! How did Xiao Fu raise a cat to be this adorable?”

“…” Song Yu felt like pulling his fur out. Mom, my cuteness is innate, not a result of Fu Yuqian’s care.

This is exhausting. Mom doesn’t even feel like she’s on my side anymore.

Still, being able to stay with his mom made Song Yu immensely happy and content.

He glanced at his human body still asleep on the bed. The fair skin tinged with a healthy flush, the sunlight streaming in from the window—it was like a scene from a fairytale, with him as the prince in eternal slumber. At first, Song Yu wasn’t used to seeing himself from this angle, but after a few more looks, he was left with only one thought:

Wow, I’m really good-looking.

Song’s mom followed his gaze to his body, and the smile on her face gradually faded. She sighed softly. “When will my Xiao Yu wake up?”

Song Yu meowed, climbed up, and wrapped his tiny paws around his mom’s thin, frail shoulders, nuzzling her with his head. Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll wake up, I promise.

“Thankfully, Xiao Fu brought you here to keep me company. With you around, I actually feel at ease.”

Song Yu: …Fine. Life is cruel. I’ll just have to get used to it.

Although Fu Yuqian had said his assistant would send over Yiyi’s belongings soon, it wasn’t until 3 PM that Liu Le and another male assistant arrived. Liu Le, petite and carrying several large bags on her back, was sweating profusely, her round face glistening. Behind her, the male assistant had gone all out and brought an exaggeratedly large suitcase.

Song’s mom hurriedly stood up to welcome the visitors. Liu Le, with her round face and bright smile, was immediately likable. “Hello, Auntie. I’m Liu Le, Fu Yuqian’s assistant, but you can just call me Lele. These are Yiyi’s essentials—these bags contain cat food and treats. There are also some homemade cat meals that can be stored for a while. Just heat them up after taking them out of the fridge,” she explained warmly.

“Ai, Lele, how much do all these bags of cat food cost?” Song’s mom asked, eyeing the foreign labels on the packaging.

Liu Le glanced at them and answered precisely, “This is imported deep-sea fish cat food from Canada. It costs 1,500 yuan per bag. Yiyi usually eats one bag in about half a month.”

“And what about these treats?” Song’s mom inquired further.

“The treats are a bit pricier. Altogether, these cost over 3,000 yuan.”

Song’s mom clutched her chest in shock. In her eyes, Song Yu had already turned into a money-guzzling monster.

No one knew her better than her son. Song Yu could immediately tell from her expression that she had been planning to ask if Fu Yuqian could let her keep Yiyi permanently. But now, she had given up—she couldn’t afford it.

Song Yu never imagined that a few bags of cat food and snacks would create such a distance between him and his mom.

“Meow…” Mom, I’d happily eat plain bread as long as I can stay with you.

Song Yu felt like his heart was breaking into pieces.

Liu Le, adept at reading the room, quickly chimed in with a laugh, “Auntie, Brother Qian is very particular about raising cats, but it doesn’t have to be this expensive. If you ever want to keep a cat, I can help you choose something more affordable.”

But Song’s mom, accustomed to living frugally, had already given up the idea of keeping a cat altogether.

After settling everything, Liu Le opened the suitcase brought by the male assistant and presented it to Song’s mom. “Auntie, Brother Qian personally picked out a few outfits as a thank-you for taking care of Yiyi. See if you like them.”

“No, no, that’s not necessary. Why is Xiao Fu being so polite? I already brought my own clothes,” Song’s mom hurriedly declined.

“Auntie, the tags have already been removed, and the clothes have been washed. They can’t be returned now. Please accept them. Brother Qian said that if you insist, you can just have Song Yu pay him back once he wakes up. It’s really just a token of his gratitude. He genuinely likes and respects you—he even said you remind him of his own mother,” Liu Le said with skillful persuasion.

Song’s mom’s impression of Fu Yuqian improved further. She had come in a hurry, bringing only two sets of clothes that she had been washing and reusing. The outfits Fu Yuqian bought were of excellent quality and matched her taste perfectly. Though she initially hesitated, her resolve to refuse wavered. “I’ve really troubled Xiao Fu. I even gave him the cold shoulder at first. Who would’ve thought he’s such a thoughtful young man?”

“Meow meow meow!” Mom, those are sugar-coated traps! Don’t fall for them! I could’ve bought you clothes too!

Song’s mom continued, “You don’t know how bad Xiao Yu’s taste in clothes is. It’s either too juvenile or too old-fashioned. He’d even ask me excitedly if I liked them! As a mom, how can you say no when your son buys you something? But these outfits from Xiao Fu are just perfect.”

Song Yu: …Mom, were you lying when you said you liked what I bought for you?!

Liu Le chuckled. “Brother Song is always busy with work. Honestly, Brother Qian isn’t great at shopping either. He actually asked his mom for help, and with her advice, he picked these out.”

Once again, Song’s mom was touched. “What a good kid!”

Song Yu covered his face with his paws in shame. He realized that despite being signed to his agency for four years and debuted for three, he had never taken his mom shopping to find out what she really liked.

Finally, Liu Le added, “Auntie, Dr. Ying Qi, who is treating Brother Song, is one of Brother Qian’s childhood friends. If you need anything, feel free to reach out to him. Brother Qian has already arranged everything.”

“All of this was arranged by Xiao Fu?” Song’s mom suddenly understood. No wonder her stay had been so comfortable, with excellent accommodations and care. She recognized Ying Qi as a kind and patient young doctor. Now it made sense—Fu Yuqian had been orchestrating everything behind the scenes.

Song’s mom didn’t know what to say. Once again, she lamented, “Why didn’t I have a daughter? A son-in-law like this would be impossible to find even with a lantern!”

As Liu Le finished arranging things and prepared to leave, the door was suddenly knocked on. A group of people entered, led by Song Yu’s manager, Zhao Hua. Her arm was still in a cast, and she looked even thinner, her sharp, critical expression making her seem even more unkind.

Zhao Hua immediately recognized Liu Le. As Fu Yuqian’s first assistant, she was well-known. Zhao Hua’s brows furrowed tightly. “What are you doing here? Are you here to harm Song Yu?” Then, spotting the cat on the floor, she snapped, “Who allowed you to keep a cat here? What if it disturbs Song Yu?”

Her condescending tone was infuriating, and she didn’t even greet Song’s mom properly. Her raised eyebrows made her look like a stereotypical villain.

Liu Le, who had been polite to Song’s mom, didn’t bother holding back with Zhao Hua. “Manager Zhao, please watch your tone. It’s clear that you’re the one disturbing Brother Song’s rest right now. Don’t you even understand the basic courtesy of keeping quiet around a patient?”

Song’s mom, however, was intimidated by Zhao Hua. “Yiyi is very well-behaved. Xiao Fu brought him here to keep me company. He won’t disturb Xiao Yu.”

“If Fu Yuqian brought it, then it’s even more unacceptable! How can you take care of Song Yu while keeping a cat? At your age, don’t you even understand something so basic?” Zhao Hua’s tone grew harsher.

Song’s mom shrank back, not daring to speak further. Watching this, Song Yu felt his anger boil over. It’s one thing to bully me, but no one bullies my mom!

Song Yu arched his body, claws extended, and leapt like a little cannonball. He hooked onto Zhao Hua’s clothes, nimbly jumped onto her waist, and with a quick swipe of his paw, scratched her face. Then, using his back legs to push off for momentum, he spun midair and landed steadily on the hospital bed, crouching low in a defensive posture. He growled in a low voice, “Aowu.” Zhao Hua, get out!

Song Yu’s speed was too fast for Zhao Hua to react. By the time she felt the stinging pain on her face, she let out a shrill scream, “Catch that cat and beat it to death!”

The people behind her moved to act, but Liu Le and the male assistant quickly stepped in to block them. Liu Le’s face turned icy cold as she declared, “This is Fu Yuqian’s cat. If any of you dare touch it, you’ll face the consequences!”

The male assistant Tang Qin also wore a dark expression. “Zhao Hua, you’d better think carefully. Do you have what it takes to go head-to-head with Huacan?”

Tang Qin assumed a Taekwondo ready stance. Previously quiet and unassuming, his aura instantly changed, exuding a strong presence. The people behind him could tell at a glance that he was a trained martial artist.

Zhao Hua’s chest heaved with anger as he gritted his teeth and clutched his face. Suddenly, realization dawned on him. “Could it be that Huacan wants to sign Song Yu? Dream on! Even if Song Yu dies, he’ll die with Xingyue!”

With that, Zhao Hua turned and left.

Song Yu’s mother, her eyes red with tears, spoke with a trembling voice full of anguish, “Are you even human?”

Song Yu was trembling with hatred but felt powerless. Xingyue held his lifeline; if they refused to let him go, he might truly be forced to compromise.

“Auntie, don’t be afraid. With Qian-ge here, he won’t let them bully Song Yu.” Liu Le spoke, feeling indignant as she witnessed such a heartless company for the first time. She also noticed Zhao Hua’s disdainful and scornful gaze toward Song Yu’s mother.

What on earth was going on?

Song Yu’s mother sobbed quietly. Song Yu straightened up and hugged her legs, meowing softly to comfort her.

Song Yu’s mother lifted him up and thanked them in a hoarse voice. Liu Le quickly asked, “Auntie, do you know why Xingyue treats Song Yu so poorly?” She couldn’t shake off her sense of unease.

“I fell ill, and Xingyue paid for my treatment,” Song Yu’s mother said, holding Song Yu as if drawing strength from him. “So Xiao Yu signed that contract for me. It’s my fault. I was incapable and dragged him down.”

Song Yu quickly hugged his mother, as if to say, no, Mom, it’s not you. It’s him—he’s useless, good for nothing except his looks.

The mother and son, one human and one cat, hugged each other and cried. Liu Le couldn’t help but tear up as well.

After finally comforting Song Yu’s mother, Liu Le called Fu Yuxian to explain the situation. However, Fu Yuxian had already been watching everything through the camera hidden in the cat tag around Song Yu’s neck. He also found Zhao Hua’s attitude strange. Even if Xingyue had lent money to treat Song Yu’s mother, there was no reason for them to act so high and mighty.

Previously, he had only heard rumors about Xingyue being harsh. He hadn’t expected them to treat Song Yu, someone he cherished, like this. Fu Yuxian was furious. He resolved to get to the bottom of this. As for Xingyue, it had no reason to continue existing.
