WTDWPK Chapter 35

The Real Yiyi

【Sis, why you gotta be so savage—but as soon as you set that flag, I felt like something was definitely gonna happen.】
【Everyone calm down, Jia Yan is great too. Don’t stir up drama between the fanbases.】

All kinds of bullet comments scrolled across the screen so fast and thick you couldn’t even see people’s faces.

The launch ceremony went smoothly, and afterward came the media interviews. Fu Yuqian answered a few questions, such as his views on same-sex web dramas. One reporter even asked a leading question, trying to find out if Fu Yuqian was into men. But Fu Yuqian had long prepared for this and responded with polished, diplomatic answers that revealed nothing.

The reporters didn’t get any juicy gossip and felt a bit frustrated. One of them, on a whim, shoved the microphone toward Song Yu.

Song Yu was actually in a great mood and had a strong desire to express himself, so everyone at the scene was suddenly treated to a long-winded stream of adorable, meowing speech.

First of all, I’m honored to be part of this web drama. I’ve thoroughly read the script and will do my best during filming.
Secondly, I’d like to say to all my fans: You’re definitely going to love this drama after you watch it, especially because of Fu Yuqian—my boyfriend—whose acting is phenomenal and will absolutely impress everyone.
Lastly, I hope our filming goes smoothly and we can wrap up as soon as possible.

The reporter had initially acted without thinking, and after hearing the meowing, instinctively wanted to pull the mic back. But Fu Yuqian stopped him: “Don’t move. Let Yiyi finish.”

So everyone stood there, stunned, listening to a cat give a speech.

The bullet comments were in hysterics, especially Song Yu’s fans, who flooded the screen with laughter.

【Hahahaha what kind of treasure cat is this? I swear it actually sounds like it’s giving a speech. Am I going crazy?】
【Aaaahhh Yiyi is too cute. I can’t breathe!】
【I declare: our baby Yiyi is debuting in the center position!】
【Yiyi is just like our Song ge—always going on and on LOL】
【Fu Yuqian spoils this cat way too much. He actually let it give a whole speech. I love it. That reporter’s “end me now” face is killing me hahahahaha】

Thanks to Song Yu, the reporter unexpectedly got a bit famous. He was a clean-cut young guy, and the way he held the mic with a mortified blush, clearly wanting to disappear into the ground, got a lot of amused laughs from viewers—and got his media outlet some recognition, too.

Finally, when Song Yu’s “speech” ended, Fu Yuqian chuckled, rubbed his head, and explained, “Sorry, our Yiyi is a bit of a chatterbox. But he’s also part of the cast, so I think he has the right to express his thoughts.”

The people around all chuckled kindly.

And so, amidst Song Yu’s meows, the launch ceremony came to a successful end.

Guo Mao couldn’t stop laughing because of Song Yu. This cat really was born to be the center of attention—just like one would expect from Fu Yuqian’s pet.

He was very confident about the scenes being filmed today.

He had specifically chosen two scenes to shoot—one where Fu Qingyu receives the imperial edict, and another showing Leng Yunlin interacting with the cat. Originally, he was worried Yiyi might require a lot of retakes, but seeing how steady and full of flair Yiyi was, brimming with a desire to perform, he was certain it would all go smoothly.

Tang Jiayan, on the other hand, seemed troubled. He was just a junior in college, lucky enough to be cast as the male lead in a web drama. During this time, he had also been signed by an agency and now had a manager and assistant.

He had seen the online comments. Most people thought he didn’t look right standing next to Fu Yuqian. Although Director Guo Mao hadn’t said anything outright, his attitude seemed to reflect the same thought.

After all, he was still a student and didn’t have strong mental resilience. Plus, it was his first time acting. He made several rookie mistakes, and during the first scene they filmed, his performance fell far short of his audition.

Guo Mao frowned. “Jiayan, don’t be nervous. Come here, I’ll walk you through the scene again.”

Tang Jiayan had a good attitude, apologizing constantly. He jogged over to Guo Mao to listen, and even Fu Yuqian offered a few pointers—surprising Guo Mao, because Fu Yuqian’s suggestions were very professional. They ended up discussing the script, and to Guo Mao’s astonishment, Fu Yuqian had memorized the entire script.

It was truly unbelievable.

Guo Mao was delighted, while Tang Jiayan felt more and more pressure.

After four or five takes and still not getting the desired result, Guo Mao gave up. He was normally a mild-tempered director, but even he was starting to feel the strain. Tang Jiayan looked like he was on the verge of tears, so Guo Mao simply waved it off, had the crew reset the scene, and moved on to film Leng Yunlin’s scene with the ginger cat.

Tang Jiayan bit his lip and cursed himself for being so disappointing. The worse his acting got, the more the bullet comments ate away at him.

Seeing Tang Jiayan’s lips go pale from biting them, Guo Mao sighed. “Don’t take it too hard. You don’t have any scenes for the first half of the month anyway—just focus on adjusting and getting used to the crew.”

“Yes, I’m sorry, Director Guo,” Tang Jiayan said, though he still couldn’t shake it off internally.

Soon, the set was ready, and Fu Yuqian carried Song Yu over to the filming area.

Fu Yuqian gently laid Song Yu down and softly patted his body. “Yiyi, are you sleepy? Take a little nap.”

Song Yu obediently closed his eyes.

Then Fu Yuqian closed his eyes too. When he opened them again, he was fully in character.

“Miaomiao, what’s wrong? Tell me quickly, where does it hurt?” Leng Yunlin’s face was filled with concern, and his eyes were brimming with emotion. His delivery was flawless.

Fu Qingyu had been having a nightmare and was suddenly shaken awake. Half-asleep and irritated, he instinctively slapped the person in front of him. A loud smack echoed. He froze and opened his eyes—only to see Leng Yunlin’s face. And… he had turned into a cat?

He sat there dazed for a second before rage took over. He leapt up and started smacking Leng Yunlin’s handsome face left and right in a flurry of slaps.

The whole scene was done in one take. Not only did Fu Yuqian deliver a stellar performance, but even the cat acted incredibly naturally.

Guo Mao beamed. “Good, good, this take’s perfect. Teacher Fu, amazing work. Your acting skills are way beyond expectations—this drama’s beneath your level. And Yiyi, you were fantastic too!”

Song Yu flicked his tail modestly, basking in the praise. His tail wagged cheerfully—of course! Three days without seeing him, and your boy can act now!

“I really like the script, Director Guo. No need to be so modest,” Fu Yuqian replied gently and humbly, instantly winning over nearly everyone on set.

Tang Jiayan clenched his fists again. He—he wasn’t even as good as a cat.

Thinking about having to do scenes opposite Fu Yuqian later made him panic. Not only was he far less good-looking, his acting was also leagues behind. He could already imagine what audiences would say when the drama aired—they’d definitely think he wasn’t worthy of Fu Yuqian. The thought sparked resentment in him.

He had actually paired well with Zhu Mingkun. They’d even discussed fanservice strategies and CP marketing for mutual benefit. But now that the male lead had changed to Fu Yuqian—he’d be a fool to try that. Everyone knew Fu Yuqian was famous for refusing to do CP marketing.

But if you don’t do CPs… why are you starring in a BL drama?

Tang Jiayan was practically losing his mind.

After the scene wrapped, Guo Mao had originally wanted to check if Tang Jiayan had adjusted enough to retry his scenes—after all, extras cost money, and even a well-funded production couldn’t waste resources. But when he saw Jiayan’s state, he gave up on asking and said, “Let’s just move on to the character portraits.”

They did individual shots first, followed by group photos.

When it was Fu Yuqian’s turn to take photos with Song Yu, he came up with a pose where Song Yu would “hit” him in the face and glare fiercely—projecting an “I’m super fierce” vibe.

He leaned in and said to Song Yu, “Yiyi, when we’re taking the photo, you have to look fierce, okay? If you’re not fierce enough, I’ll take you to see your most hated little she-cat.”

Song Yu instantly transformed into a snarling tiger.

The resulting photo had amazing impact—funny yet full of chemistry.

Then they took another shot where Fu Yuqian lowered his head and kissed Song Yu’s forehead. Despite Song Yu’s fierce look, the kiss made him visibly shy.

The photos turned out so well they barely needed any editing.

After the photoshoot, Guo Mao had Fu Yuqian and Tang Jiayan take some pictures together, but as soon as they stood side by side, the sense of mismatch was overwhelming.

Fu Yuqian’s looks were top-tier even by industry standards. His mixed-heritage features carried both the depth of Eastern beauty and the striking lines of the West, and even dressed in historical costume, he looked completely natural.

By contrast, Tang Jiayan, with his merely delicate and pleasant appearance, fell far short. He didn’t look like the most distinguished young master of the capital at all—instead, he resembled a good-looking sidekick standing beside one.

Guo Mao clutched his head in despair, convinced he was going to go bald at a young age.

What was he supposed to do?

No matter how well they edited the final photo, the feel just wouldn’t come through if the original chemistry wasn’t there.

For a split second, Guo Mao found himself thinking—if only Song Yu were the one standing next to Fu Yuqian, there definitely wouldn’t be this kind of visual mismatch. But he quickly snapped himself out of it. What the hell am I thinking? Two top-tier stars starring in my drama? I must be dreaming.

Tang Jiayan had already been feeling insecure, and seeing Guo Mao’s expression only made him feel worse. He even started considering quitting the production altogether.

Fu Yuqian also felt a bit torn. After all, he had taken on this project in a moment of impulse—mainly because he didn’t want to see Song Yu being held by another man. But now, that decision had led to this awkward outcome. Still, he couldn’t help the way he looked, and there wasn’t much he could do about it. Deep down, Fu Yuqian also secretly wished Song Yu could wake up and perform their scenes together. As for Tang Jiayan, he figured he could compensate him with other resources later—just like he did with Zhu Mingkun. One way or another, he wouldn’t let the kid suffer a loss.

Meanwhile, Song Yu was still busy being jealous. Hmph. Fu Yuqian, that lousy man, says he only loves me, but turns around and starts filming a BL drama with someone else.

No cuddling tonight.

In the end, Guo Mao had no choice but to scrap the joint shots and have them take individual promotional photos instead. They would have to rely on post-editing to enhance Tang Jiayan’s images.

They still had time, so he figured he’d think more about how to fix the issue later.

The morning scenes wrapped up, and the afternoon’s filming was again focused on Fu Yuqian and Song Yu. Since Fu Yuqian had specifically requested it, they were shooting all of Song Yu’s scenes first.

The afternoon shoot went incredibly smoothly—Fu Yuqian and Song Yu nailed nearly every scene on the first take, only needing a few extra shots to fill in the camera angles.

Tang Jiayan didn’t show up. His assistant claimed he wasn’t feeling well and had taken the day off. Of course, Guo Mao knew exactly what was going on and could only sigh.

After a full day of filming, Song Yu was a little tired but very excited, meowing nonstop the whole way back. Fu Yuqian showered him with praise and carried him back to the hotel.

The production had money to spare, so they had booked out an entire hotel near the film set. As the lead actor, Fu Yuqian naturally got the best room—a small presidential suite. Though “small” was relative; it still had to be big enough to store all of Song Yu’s things.

Fu Yuqian climbed onto the bed with Song Yu in his arms, gently kissed his head, and said, “Yiyi, get some sleep.”

Song Yu really was tired. At Fu Yuqian’s words, he closed his eyes, and drowsiness washed over him.

But just before drifting off, he seemed to hear a confused “meow?” echo faintly in his mind…
