WTDWPK Chapter 39

The Third Party

The moment Jiaye entered, the air seemed to quiet down, imbued with a touch of tranquil Zen.

He was dressed in a white coat that reached past his knees. His features were refined and handsome, his aura calm and serene—like a snow lotus blooming high in the mountains.

Song’s mother and Song Yu were both stunned once again.

Song’s mother even had the urge to press her hands together and bow to him. The last time she saw him, she had been too distressed and worried about Song Yu to get a good look at him.

Song Yu remembered him too. At the time, Fu Yuqian hadn’t introduced Jiaye’s identity, only said he was a friend. Song Yu had really liked him—he even flipped onto his back and slept on Jiaye’s lap. Thinking back now, Fu Yuqian must have already been suspicious of him then. So smart.

“Hello, Auntie Song. Hello again, Xiaoyu.” Jiaye smiled gently and greeted them.

“Hello.” Song’s mother quickly said, “You know about Xiaoyu’s situation. Can he return to his own body now?”

But Song Yu was skeptical. Was Jiaye on Fu Yuqian’s side? Were they working together—had they planned all this out? He didn’t dare trust Fu Yuqian anymore.

His reaction struck a painful chord in Fu Yuqian’s heart. He pressed his lips together, silently cursing himself for bringing this upon himself. Before, Song Yu had trusted him completely—it was he who failed to cherish that.
“Jiaye is the most capable master in the field. I didn’t bribe him. And you were on the call when I contacted him,” Fu Yuqian explained awkwardly.

Song Yu’s ears twitched, and he turned his head away, refusing to look at him.

Even though Jiaye was intelligent, he couldn’t predict everything—especially not when it came to emotions, where he was completely clueless. He only found it strange: these two had clearly triggered their love destiny, practically glued to each other. Fu Yuqian could even faintly see traces of a red string binding them. However, the string looked weak and faint—it still needed tempering.

He examined Song Yu closely, then said in surprise, “Yiyi’s soul is actually awake? And you’re sharing one body? I did vaguely calculate earlier that Yiyi would wake up ahead of time—forgot to mention it. Can you communicate with Yiyi now?” His tone carried clear curiosity.

The moment he said this, both Fu Yuqian and Song Yu turned and glared at him in anger.

Jiaye’s scalp tingled. Instinctively, he took a step back, nearly unable to maintain his aloof aura. What did he say wrong?

In that instant, Fu Yuqian finally understood everything—why Song Yu had suddenly learned the truth. He never expected that it was Jiaye who had inadvertently exposed it. If he had known Yiyi would awaken early, he never would’ve lied to Song Yu like that.

Meanwhile, Song Yu’s claws itched. He really wanted to draw a map on Jiaye’s face. He could have had a sweet love story—but Jiaye had ruined it.

“Let’s focus on helping Song Yu recover first,” Fu Yuqian said darkly. “The rest… we’ll deal with later.”

Jiaye meekly nodded. “I’ll give it a try.”

Song Yu crouched beside his own body, two sharp cat-eyes fixed intently on Jiaye. Jiaye rubbed his prayer beads and muttered a chant under his breath.

Song Yu could feel a faint tugging sensation, but his soul remained firmly in Yiyi’s body. Yiyi also woke up, asking curiously, “Who’s this human?”

“He’s a jerk,” Song Yu huffed. “Yiyi, from now on, whenever you see him, scratch him, got it?”

Yiyi solemnly promised, “Don’t worry, Mommy.”

“…Wait, what did you just call me?” Song Yu doubted his own ears.

“Mommy,” Yiyi replied innocently. “You’re the one Daddy wants to mate with—you’re his other half. Don’t you humans like it when we call you Mommy and Daddy? He’s my Daddy, so you’re my Mommy.”

Song Yu immediately corrected, “I’m not Mommy! You can call Fu Yuqian Mommy—no wait, I haven’t agreed to be with him—and no, we won’t be together. You’re supposed to come with me, remember? Just call me Daddy.”

Yiyi’s brain short-circuited from confusion.

While the two argued in their heads, Jiaye was sweating from the effort of chanting, still failing to bring the soul back.

Fu Yuqian was losing his patience.

After Jiaye finished reciting the summoning incantation, the Song Yu on the bed was still lying there peacefully.

Jiaye stopped communicating with Yiyi, then looked up at Jiaye—but Yiyi narrowed his cat eyes, clearly ready to scratch.

“This…” Jiaye swallowed nervously. This was the first time he’d encountered a situation like this. “The timing’s not right. I can’t summon him back yet. Mr. Fu, let me perform a divination for you.”

“How?” Fu Yuqian asked.

Jiaye took out three square-holed Qin dynasty-style copper coins and a divination tray from his bag. He explained, “Mr. Fu, please cup these three coins in both hands, silently repeat your question three times in your heart, shake them, and toss them into the tray. Do this six times—this method is called ‘six lines’ (liù yáo).”

Fu Yuqian understood. He picked up the coins and glanced at Song Yu.

Song Yu was quite curious about this method and wanted to try it himself, but his cat paws couldn’t hold the coins, so he gave up and pinned his hopes on Fu Yuqian.

Fu Yuqian closed his eyes and sincerely asked in his heart when Song Yu would return to his body. After repeating the question three times, he began shaking and tossing the coins—six times in total.

Jiaye noted down the hexagram, then asked what Fu Yuqian had silently asked, and interpreted the result:
“Mr. Fu, your question is related to romance. If your relationship goes smoothly, the outcome will be successful. Based on the red string already formed between you, Song Yu should have already awakened. But wait—the final hexagram has transformed. After the change… it shows a third party interfering, causing obstacles in the relationship. Mr. Fu, how could you do this? You haven’t even won Song Yu over, and you already have a third party?”

Fu Yuqian, Song Yu, and Yiyi: “……”

Oh no. The reading was spot-on.

Song Yu’s cat face turned grim. He didn’t even know where to start complaining. Did this mean he had to accept Fu Yuqian’s confession to return to his human body? As for the third party, he trusted Fu Yuqian’s character—he had barely spent time with anyone else, let alone flirt with someone. The only possible “third party”… was Yiyi.

How could something so ridiculous happen?! Jiaye really was the useless teammate Fu Yuqian had dragged in!

Fu Yuqian didn’t know what to say either. Fate really seemed to favor him this time. If that’s the case, he swore he’d seize this chance and properly pursue Song Yu.

Song’s mother also understood what was going on. She looked at Fu Yuqian, then at Song Yu, and silently covered her face. Back in her day, love and hate were so straightforward—how did things get so complicated now? She couldn’t keep up anymore.

Song Yu still didn’t quite believe it, but deep down, there was a faint feeling that the divination was right.

Annoying.

Meanwhile, at a filming base far away in Province Z, someone walked into Guo Mao’s room. It was Tang Jiayan—the actor playing Fu Qingyu.

Tang Jiayan looked conflicted, clearly struggling to speak.

Guo Mao was puzzled. “Xiao Tang, what brings you here? You’re not scheduled to shoot today.”

But internally, he started overthinking: What’s Xiao Tang up to? Is he planning something improper? I’m not that kind of director!
Even though he filmed BL dramas, he had a long-term girlfriend and would never cross that line. He was already preparing to firmly reject and lecture Tang Jiayan if he said anything inappropriate.

But Tang Jiayan suddenly dropped a bomb:
“Director Guo… I want to quit the show.”

“What?” Guo Mao thought he misheard. Tang Jiayan wanted to quit this drama? He couldn’t understand—especially since this series had unprecedented hype after Fu Yuqian joined. Everyone was working hard, hoping to ride the wave of popularity.

Tang Jiayan himself felt torn, but this decision came after a discussion with his agency.

He could still hear his agent’s warning:
“Jiayan, in same-sex dramas, the ‘top’ role usually gains fans easily, but the ‘bottom’ role gets pigeonholed. It’s hard to land other roles later—unless your performance is absolutely outstanding and you can outshine Fu Yuqian. But with his acting skills, are you confident you can surpass him? When the drama airs, you might fade into the background—or worse, his fans might blame you for dragging him down.”

“Also, when it comes to Fu Yuqian and Song Yu, I’d bet my entire career—he definitely has feelings for Song Yu. With his cunning, finesse, and capability, winning Song Yu over is just a matter of time. If they go public in the future, won’t you—who once acted in a romantic role with him—look like cannon fodder by comparison? And I keep feeling that Fu Yuqian might even be planning to bring Song Yu into this drama, as a test run to see how the fans respond. That way, he’d be laying the groundwork for coming out in the future. So I suggest: rather than wait until filming begins, it’s better to step away early. Fu Yuqian will probably offer you other work opportunities as compensation.”

Their agency wasn’t big, but Tang Jiayan’s manager treated him well—like raising a child, always earnestly advising him. Tang Jiayan could feel that. He was confident in his formal training and believed his acting wasn’t bad, but he absolutely couldn’t compete with Fu Yuqian. So, he also began to waver.

Fu Yuqian was known for being generous. Recently, after suppressing Xingyue Entertainment, he had freely shared resources with artists who had complained about Xingyue’s harsh treatment. If Tang Jiayan backed out now and politely wished Fu Yuqian success, maybe he’d be offered something in return?

After much deliberation, Tang Jiayan finally decided to follow his manager’s advice and inform Director Guo Mao of his intent to withdraw from the project.

As for the penalty fee—his original pay wasn’t high, and the contract hadn’t been strictly formal when he signed it. The compensation wouldn’t amount to much. If he flattered the right people, he might not even have to pay it at all.

Guo Mao had been worried about this issue too. He knew Tang Jiayan’s acting wasn’t on par with Fu Yuqian’s. Backing out now, at least, was a smart choice. But since Fu Yuqian basically had final say on the production now—given that the producers and financiers were all from Huacan—Guo didn’t agree right away. He just said he’d talk to Fu Yuqian first.

“Thanks, Director Guo. I’ll head back and wait for the news,” Tang Jiayan said, then left Guo Mao’s office.

After exiting, he sent a WeChat friend request to Fu Yuqian:
“Mr. Fu, I’ve decided to withdraw from the production. I believe Senior Song Yu would be a perfect fit to play Fu Qingyu. I wish you all the best. No need to accept my friend request.”

Tang Jiayan felt relieved after sending it, thinking smugly that his wording was brilliant. Fu Yuqian would definitely get the message.

Now all he had to do was wait for opportunities to come his way.

Fu Yuqian saw the WeChat notification and instantly understood what Tang Jiayan meant. It aligned with his own goals, so he messaged Yin Lang to arrange a job for him.

After Jiaye left, Fu Yuqian looked at Song Yu, who was still sulking in silence, and asked sincerely,
“Xiaoyu, will you give me a chance to make it up to you?”

Author’s Note:

I really am the doting mom! But Fu Dog’s road to winning back his love won’t be easy! And once Song Cat turns back into a human, he can totally flip the script—hehe~

As for the six-line divination (六爻), my grandpa is an expert, but I only know the basics. The stuff written in the story isn’t necessarily accurate~ (/ω\)
