Chapter 14

Bleeding Leg

“No need.” Striding past Bai Moyu, she wanted nothing to do with the Bai family. If it weren’t for Liang Shuzhen, she honestly wouldn’t have come.

“Wanqiu…” The man behind her called softly, his voice filled with apology.

“Goodbye.” She broke into a run, her heart pounding with fear and confusion, feeling overwhelmed by how such a handsome man could call her name and gaze at her like that. His eyes were as deep and tender as water, yet she always felt they were fake, absolutely unreal. The first time she saw Bai Moyu looking at her with those eyes, she felt as if she had fallen into a dream.

But she didn’t like men who were so refined and beautiful. The orphanage teacher had said her late father was like that, too gentle and elegant, the kind of man women fell for at first sight.

She didn’t like it. If another woman hadn’t stolen her father’s captivating eyes, her mother wouldn’t have jumped to her death, and she wouldn’t have been sent to the orphanage after her father’s belated remorse led him to commit suicide. This lingering loss makes her feel vulnerable and misunderstood, deepening the audience’s empathy.

For her entire life, she would never fall for a man like her father.

Zhong Wanqiu ran as fast as she could, as if the man behind her were a venomous snake or a ferocious beast.

“Screech ”

The sound of emergency brakes and a car horn rang out abruptly in her ears. Her body swayed, and the violent impact sent Zhong Wanqiu tumbling to the ground. Pain, a sharp sting in her leg, made her frown.

A shadow quickly fell over her, and a cold yet familiar male voice spoke to her again on this very day, “Zhong Wanqiu, still not giving up?”

Heavens, of all people to run into, it was Leng Muxun.

No wonder his words were so harsh. Did he think she was trying to seduce him?

Propping herself up with her hands on the ground, ignoring the pain in her leg, Zhong Wanqiu stubbornly stood up.

“Wanqiu, why are you so careless?” Bai Moyu had caught up and reached out to help her up. “Let me take you to the hospital for a check-up.” His concern shows he cares, making readers feel the importance of genuine kindness in the story.

“Thank you, let’s go.” Without looking at Leng Muxun, she allowed Bai Moyu to support her as she limped forward, all the while scanning the street for a passing taxi.

Her leg hurt terribly. Neither she nor Bai Moyu noticed the blood droplets quietly dripping onto the ground. Leng Muxun watched the bright red blood, feeling a pang of helplessness and concern, finding it unbearably glaring. From start to finish, Zhong Wanqiu hadn’t even glanced at him, leaving him with a sense of regret and longing.

Had his words been too harsh just now?

Suddenly, he recalled how she had looked when she turned and left his office like a wounded fawn. That expression was truly different from the women who had schemed to get close to him in the past.

Perhaps he had really misjudged her.

His phone rang. Leng Muxun watched as Zhong Wanqiu got into a taxi with the man supporting her. “Xiao Zhang, what is it?” It was his secretary calling urgently; something must have happened.

“President, the medical report you requested from the U.S. has arrived.”

“How is it?”

“Not good at all. Probably doesn’t have much time left.”

His heart sank. “I understand.” After saying that, he hung up.

There was still a meeting to attend. Only after finishing it would he have time to spare. He needed to make early arrangements for his grandfather’s matters.

Shaking his head, Leng Muxun got back into his car. Since that woman had a man to take care of her, there was no need for him to worry. That night, he must have been insane to kiss her.

So alike, those lips and eyes were so similar, but alas, she was not Minqiu.

The car sped like the wind toward the convention center. He was to be the main attraction there today, so there was no more time to delay.
