He thought it resembled a cloud drifting through the high sky.

When someone called out, “Hosokawa-sensei,” the sound of that voice made his heart skip a beat.

Clenching the digital camera in his hands, Hosokawa Minato looked up at the approaching figure—a track team member, Ogiwara Koushi, striding toward him.

Wearing a T-shirt and shorts typical of practice, Ogiwara’s attire seemed too thin for this early June season. Still, sweat glistened on his forehead and cheeks. It wasn’t just his height—tallest in his grade—that made him stand out. The muscular yet lithe limbs exposed by his short sleeves and hem showcased the unique strength of an athlete, making him look like a completely different person from his usual appearance in a school uniform.

After unconsciously stepping back a few paces, Minato noticed Ogiwara frowning. “Could you stop taking photos without permission? I really hate that, and it’s a bother.”

Recognizing the look of exasperation in his cool gaze, Minato finally snapped out of it. “Sorry! It’s just that…you looked so amazing, I couldn’t help it. I’ll delete the photo right away!”

Startled by the valid complaint, Minato nearly dropped the camera. As he fumbled with the controls, a low voice suddenly came from above. “Amazing, huh? You mean me? …What kind of photo did you take?”

“Uh, the moment you jumped earlier—”

“Let me see.”

Raising his head at the insistent tone, Minato found their eyes meeting. Just moments ago, Ogiwara had seemed annoyed, but now his expression brimmed with curiosity. The shift made Minato’s heart skip again.

“Sure, but I’m really just an amateur.”

“You mentioned it was your hobby during your introduction, didn’t you?”

Surprised by the quick reply, Minato blinked. He dropped his gaze to the camera in his hands, hesitatingly handing it over. Watching Ogiwara, who brushed aside his bangs and focused on the screen, felt oddly distant, as if it were happening to someone else.

Minato had begun his teaching practicum at this public high school in late May, just a week ago. His supervising teacher, a veteran and the grade leader, was also the homeroom teacher for Class 2-6.

Ogiwara, a member of Class 2-6, stood out not just in his class but among the entire student body. Since starting pole vaulting in his first year of high school, he had achieved remarkable results in numerous competitions. Over spring break, he even joined a university track team’s spring training camp after being scouted. Last month, during the school’s sports festival, he led his class basketball team to victory against the third-years, clinching the championship.

Academically, Ogiwara was also exceptional, consistently ranking at the top since his entrance exams. Despite being five years younger than Minato, he exuded a maturity that rivaled adults. His refined features rarely showed much expression, lending him a noble and unapproachable air. The only thing softening this impression was his slightly unruly, naturally wavy hair.

Even though Minato saw him daily during homeroom and class observations, this was the first time they’d spoken. It wasn’t just Ogiwara; Minato, as an intern, was treated by Class 2-6 like an ornamental plant, largely ignored unless something noteworthy happened.

Some students likely didn’t even know his name. The thought that Ogiwara remembered his self-introduction from a week ago had never crossed Minato’s mind.

“What did you mean by ‘amazing’ earlier?”

At the low voice, Minato looked up to find Ogiwara staring intently at him. Flustered by the piercing gaze, the words spilled out unbidden.

“Ah, um…I thought you were like a cloud.”

“A cloud? I’ve been told I’m like a bird, but a cloud’s a first.”

Ogiwara’s intrigued response made Minato’s gaze wander.

“Sorry, the truth is…I was carrying my camera for the photography club, and I noticed an interesting cloud shape, so I couldn’t help myself.”

“Do you often take pictures of clouds?”

“…The colors of the sky and the shapes of the clouds—no two are ever the same.”

Earlier, during a photography club meeting, Minato had been asked by his supervising teacher to retrieve a photo book from the library across the field. As he walked with his camera in his pocket, a unique cloud in the western sky caught his eye. Reflexively, he raised his camera to capture it. At that moment, Ogiwara’s jumping form entered the frame.

“Sorry for being impulsive. You can delete the photo yourself if you’d like. Feel free to check the other photos as well if it bothers you.”

The camera’s screen displayed Ogiwara’s arched form mid-jump, set against the blue sky. It was the only shot, and Minato figured it would be best for Ogiwara to confirm it himself.

Ogiwara inspected the camera intently.

“…Do you only take photos of the sky and sea?”

“It’s just a hobby. I take what I like, how I like.”

As Minato gave a wry smile, Ogiwara glanced at him again, speaking quickly.

“Could you print this photo and show me? It’s too small on this screen.”

“I don’t mind, but…should I wait to delete it, then?”

“No need to delete it.”

Blinking at the unexpected response, Minato heard someone calling Ogiwara from a distance.

Turning toward the voice, Ogiwara shrugged and quickly handed the camera back to Minato.

“Thanks in advance.”

With swift movements, he jogged off to meet what appeared to be his coach waiting several meters away. Watching Ogiwara being scolded from afar, Minato realized belatedly that he had disrupted practice.

***

Was he serious?

The next day, while holding onto a strap on the train heading to the high school, Minato adjusted the bag slung over his shoulder. Inside the easily accessible front pocket was the photo he had printed the previous day. It was just an image on thick card stock of a figure mid-backflip against the blue sky, with the face barely visible.

When should he give this to him? In the past week, he’d had no interaction with Ogiwara. How was he supposed to approach him?

“Ah, it’s Hosokawa-sensei! Good morning, you take this train too?” Hearing the familiar voice from his side, Minato reflexively turned. He clutched the strap tightly, startled.

Somehow, without him noticing, Ogiwara was right beside him. Even on the crowded train, he bent his tall frame slightly to look down at Minato.

“Good morning… You’re up early. Morning practice?”

Despite feigning calm, he was surprised to be addressed so directly.

Nearly every morning, he saw Ogiwara either on the platform of the arrival station, inside the station itself, or on the way to school. So, Minato assumed they took the same train on the same line at the same time.

However, it had always been a one-sided observation.

“Yes. But isn’t Sensei here too early? The photography club doesn’t meet in the mornings, does it?”

“I’ve got other preparations to handle. Starting today, I’ll also be teaching classes.”

“Math during fourth period, right? I’m looking forward to it.”

Ogiwara’s smooth reply, delivered so casually, was impressive—especially for a high schooler. At the same time, being alone with this Ogiwara made it impossible for Minato to stay calm.

“When do you think that photo will be ready?”

“Oh, I actually brought it with me today.”

“Could I take a look at it?”

There was no way Minato could back out now, not after seeing the eager look in Ogiwara’s eyes. Holding his bag close, Minato motioned for him to retrieve the photo from the front pocket himself. Ogiwara politely said, “Pardon me,” before extracting an envelope. He pulled out the photo, studying it intently, and exhaled softly.

“…I like this photo. If possible, could I also see the other pictures from the camera? I only got a quick look yesterday, but something about them stuck with me.”

“Sure, but they’re mostly just skies, oceans, and rivers—things like that.”

“Please. Also, if it’s alright, could you share the data for this picture with me? I’ll bring a storage device next time.”

“That’s fine. Bring a USB or a card—whichever’s convenient for you.”

Minato felt somewhat embarrassed as he responded to this unexpected request. His photos were often dismissed by others as lacking interest, so being asked for them in this way was a first.

What might have been the end of their conversation turned into casual small talk, led mostly by Ogiwara. They stayed together until they reached the arrival station. As soon as they stepped onto the platform, greetings were directed at Ogiwara from all around. Relieved to be parting ways, Minato also felt a faint pang of disappointment.

However, Ogiwara stayed by Minato’s side as they exited through the ticket gates and walked toward the school. Minato glanced up at him, puzzled.

“Shouldn’t you be with your friends?”

“I didn’t make any plans with them. Besides, Sensei and I are heading to the same place.”

*Translator’s Note: This light novel consists of 2 chapters that were separated into several parts (229 pages). Hence, I have to cut them into several pieces to be posted here. So, the numbering for my chapter will be different from the original novel. I don’t wanna divide my chapters into parts as well so we’ll just go slowly as chapter 1, 2, 3 until we reach whichever number of chapters we’ll get to. I’ve divided it so that each chapter that I’m posting on the site will probably be around 1K to 1.2K words (except for Mature chapters which might be longer). However, I will mark at the beginning of each chapter with ‘Chapter 1, Part 1.1’ and so on so that if you get your hands on the novel, you can still find which is which. There are also illustrations from the novel which I will scan and post on the site. Oyamada Ami is my Goddess, I tell you. Her illustrations excite me! Honestly, I bought this book in the first place because she’s the illustrator for it. That, and also the fact the seme is younger than the uke. Just my type. Hahaha! By the way, the cover for this novel is quite NSFW so I asked chatGPT help to put clothes on them hahaha. You can see the real cover here: https://kin0monogatari.blogspot.com/2026/07/cm-cover.html . With that being said, hop on and enjoy! -K
