SH – Chapter 55

01

When Wen Xi suggested signing up for Little Tricks for Love, Meng Zhaozhao had just finished her live stream – a birthday treat where she had chatted with her fans for two hours on a certain voice streaming platform.

She took off her headphones, looked at the flyer again and again, and asked a soul-searching question: “Doesn’t that mean we’ll have to pretend we don’t know each other?”

“Five hundred thousand each!” Wen Xi’s eyes were shining. “You can get a better recording studio.”

“I think it’s a good idea.” Meng Zhaozhao snatched the flyer and read it carefully. “Proposed guest list, Jian You? Is that the great director Jian You we know?”

“I guess so?” Wen Xi had already sat down at the computer, opened the webpage, and started filling out the information. “This is all just bait and hype. If the production team can actually get Jian You, I’ll eat this computer!”

She had just gotten out of the shower, and her hair wasn’t even dry. Water dripped slowly, leaving faint wet patches on her white lace pajamas, gradually revealing the outline of her shoulder blades.

Meng Zhaozhao couldn’t resist touching them, from a light touch to a heavier pressure. She hugged Wen Xi from behind and kissed the nape of her neck. “Don’t eat the computer.”

Wen Xi was ticklish and dodged, asking with a laugh, “Then what should I eat?”

“Eat me,” Meng Zhaozhao whispered in her ear. Her voice was a little huskier than Wen Xi’s girlish one. It was deeply affectionate when she sang love songs, and just as alluring when she whispered sweet nothings.

Wen Xi’s typing hand paused, and she leaned back against her shoulder. “Are you delicious?”

Meng Zhaozhao started to nibble on her lips, her hands beginning to wander. Her voice became muffled. “It’s not like you haven’t eaten me before.” She hooked the hem of Wen Xi’s pajamas and asked, “What if only you get selected?”

Wen Xi completely abandoned the keyboard and turned her head to focus on kissing Meng Zhaozhao.

Meng Zhaozhao’s kissing skills were excellent. She kissed her until she was dizzy. The words she wanted to say were stuck in her throat, then shattered by the jostling. She thought, if only she were selected, then the appearance fee would only be five hundred thousand. She would use it to get Meng Zhaozhao a better recording studio first.

She threaded her fingers into Meng Zhaozhao’s hair. The scents of their hair mingled, the same fragrance.

She thought again, if only she had known she would meet Meng Zhaozhao, would fall in love with Meng Zhaozhao.

She should have just walked faster through all those difficult times.

02

The first time Wen Xi saw Meng Zhaozhao, she didn’t like her.

Unfortunately, Meng Zhaozhao liked her.

03

Wen Xi came from a single-parent family. Within a year of her mother’s death, her father had remarried and had another child. From then on, she had a stepfather, a stepmother, and a stepbrother. When she was in high school, her father had a heart-to-heart talk with her, the gist of which was that he hoped she would quit school and go to work to help support the family.

Wen Xi rolled her eyes, pretended not to understand, and even managed to coax all of his private savings out of him with her silver tongue.

The next day, as she was packing her bags, she heard her stepmother scolding her father. She dragged her suitcase out of the bedroom. Her stepbrother rushed up to her, squirted her with a toy water gun, and shouted, “Money-losing good-for-nothing! Vampire!”

Wen Xi smiled sweetly, snatched the water gun from his hand, opened the cap, and poured all the water on his head before striding away.

She left amidst the sounds of crying and insults and insisted on finishing high school. She had worked many jobs: tutoring, waitressing at a maid cafe, washing dishes, selling things at a street stall, delivering food. You name it, she had done it.

She got into voice acting by accident. In short, because she was naturally talented, she did quite well. At least she had a steady income every month, no longer feared the landlord hounding her for rent, and even had some spare money to buy pretty clothes.

The first time she met Meng Zhaozhao was when she had finally received a Lolita dress she had been eyeing for a long time. She wore it to a maid cafe to meet a friend, only to be mistaken for a waitress by Meng Zhaozhao.

When Meng Zhaozhao snapped her fingers at her and gestured for her to come over, her heart skipped a beat.

Meng Zhaozhao was truly beautiful.

It was a flamboyant beauty. It was as if just by sitting there, wearing the most ordinary white shirt and casual pants, she could attract everyone’s attention, making them fall for her unconsciously.

Wen Xi’s heart pounded as she walked over, smiling. “What can I do for you?”

Meng Zhaozhao tapped the table. “Can you rush my order? I’ve been waiting for a long time. Does it take thirty minutes to make an iced Americano?”

Wen Xi: “…”

Meng Zhaozhao frowned again. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Wen Xi maintained her smile and squeezed out a sentence through her teeth, “Do I look like a waitress?”

Meng Zhaozhao blinked. “Aren’t you?”

Wen Xi: “No!”

Only then did Meng Zhaozhao realize her mistake. She muttered, “You guys are dressed so similarly.” It would have been better if she hadn’t said anything. As soon as she did, Wen Xi exploded. She sat down right then and there and gave Meng Zhaozhao a lecture on the difference between a maid outfit and a Lolita dress. By the end, she was thirsty and drank all of Meng Zhaozhao’s iced Americano. She then passionately scanned a QR code. “I’ll buy you another one!”

Meng Zhaozhao looked at her with interest. “No need. You can just transfer the money to me directly.”

That works too, Wen Xi thought. “Show me your payment code.”

Meng Zhaozhao said no need again and showed her her WeChat contact card instead. “You can just send me a red packet.”

Wen Xi narrowed her eyes. “You just want to add me on WeChat, don’t you?”

Meng Zhaozhao didn’t pretend anymore after being called out. She smiled sweetly. “Yes. Add me.”

Wen Xi was still angry and wanted to reject her harshly, but then she thought that adding her and then blocking her would be more satisfying. So she scanned Meng Zhaozhao’s contact card and added her as a friend.

Meng Zhaozhao said, “My name is Meng Zhaozhao. What’s yours?”

Wen Xi added a note for her: Blind person.

Without looking up, she said, “I’m not telling you!”

Meng Zhaozhao said, “Your name is Wen Xi.”

Only then did Wen Xi remember that the Moment she had just posted was to celebrate Wen Xi getting her first Lolita dress. Crap, she was annoyed. She had been careless!

Unable to blame herself, she glared at Meng Zhaozhao.

Meng Zhaozhao said, “You’re so cute.”

04

She definitely wants to get with me.

That night, Wen Xi, who was suffering from insomnia until four in the morning from drinking the iced Americano, had this thought for the hundredth time, and then for the hundred and first time, she wondered-

Then why isn’t she chatting with me?

05

She also forgot to block Meng Zhaozhao.

06

Later, Meng Zhaozhao would occasionally chat with her. One winter night, she even sang her “I Want to See You,” an exclusive audio, just for her. She replied coldly, “Don’t think you can get me to forgive you for mistaking me for a waitress just like that!”

Meng Zhaozhao said, “You can test me.”

Wen Xi asked, “Really?”

Meng Zhaozhao: “Mhm.”

So Wen Xi spent the night creating a Lolita quiz for Meng Zhaozhao to take. Meng Zhaozhao also stayed up all night to do it and got a perfect score. While grading it, Wen Xi sent Meng Zhaozhao a message: “You really went all out for me! Don’t be too in love with me!”

Meng Zhaozhao asked, “Then, may I ask you out for a cup of coffee?”

07

Wen Xi refused.

Because coffee gave her insomnia.

08

So they went for bubble tea instead.

09

But there was a small incident.

The bubble tea shop was on the side of the road. It was crowded on Christmas Day, and since Wen Xi had arrived early, it wasn’t surprising that she ran into an acquaintance.

The acquaintance was a high school student she had tutored before. The kid had pursued her for a while, and even after being rejected, he hadn’t given up. This time, he was still calling her “big sis” nonstop and even said, “Since we’ve met, let’s have a hug!”

Without waiting for her to agree, he pulled her into a hug.

Then, over the kid’s shoulder, she saw Meng Zhaozhao outside the window. Meng Zhaozhao was dressed lightly, standing out among the bundled-up crowd. She was also looking straight at her, walking over step by step, and then she fell flat on her face.

Wen Xi: “Wow!”

The high school kid: “?”

By the time she had pushed the kid away and chased after her, Meng Zhaozhao was already gone. She quickly tried to explain to Meng Zhaozhao on WeChat, but after sending only two sentences, she was blocked by her.

Wen Xi stood on the crowded street, thinking that Meng Zhaozhao was too petty. She had only said “wow” and hadn’t laughed at her. She had run out immediately to help her up. Why did she run away and block her! Were they still getting bubble tea or not? Were they still celebrating Christmas or not? She still wanted to see the fireworks!

After all the blaming, she thought again, Meng Zhaozhao had fallen with her bare legs on the ground. It must have really hurt.

10

She sent a friend request to Meng Zhaozhao while watching the fireworks.

【Why did you block me?】

【I admit I was planning on ordering three new drinks today, but I was only going to let you pay for one. It wouldn’t have bankrupted you! Don’t be so cheap when you’re pursuing someone!】

【I didn’t laugh at you when you fell. Don’t think it affected my image of you and get all embarrassed and angry.】

【You looked so pretty today. I didn’t even get a good look QAQ】

【If your legs are still working, can you come over and let me see?】

【Fine, don’t come!】

Half an hour later, Meng Zhaozhao unblocked her and sent a message: “Open the door.”

Her rental apartment was small, just one bedroom and one living room. But at least she wasn’t sharing with anyone. So when Meng Zhaozhao pushed her against the wall and kissed her as soon as she opened the door, she didn’t have to worry about disturbing anyone. Instead, she could wrap her arms around Meng Zhaozhao’s neck and fully enjoy the chilly yet scorching kiss.

After the kiss, she complained softly to Meng Zhaozhao, “You kiss so fiercely.”

She said, “That was my first kiss.”

She said, “You came as soon as I asked. You really like me, don’t you, Meng Zhaozhao.”

She said, “If you block me again, I’ll really get mad.”

She said, “While I’m still captivated by your beauty, hurry up and take advantage of me. Ask me if I’m willing to be your girlfriend.”

Meng Zhaozhao asked, “Are you willing to be my girlfriend?”

She kissed Meng Zhaozhao back and said, “I am.”

11

That night, they did what girlfriends do.

12

Meng Zhaozhao’s skills were pretty good.

She thought.

13

She needed to study hard.

14

And then live a shameless, debauched life.

15

Going on the dating show was fine, but pretending not to know each other was difficult for two non-professional actors. Wen Xi was troubled. She sat cross-legged on the bed, frowning as she watched old variety shows. Noticing that Meng Zhaozhao was watching her, she immediately stopped her. “Look! It’s that look! You’re not allowed to look at me like that! Don’t be too in love with me!”

Meng Zhaozhao laughed in spite of herself. “Then how should I look at you?”

“Like a stranger.” She turned the tablet to show Meng Zhaozhao. “Look at Song Yushi. No wonder she’s an award-winning actress. When she reunited with Qi Ke on the show, they were so polite, it was as if they had never been teammates.”

“You also know she’s an award-winning actress,” Meng Zhaozhao said helplessly.

“Although Qi Ke’s acting was a little worse, it was still commendable. You can learn from her.” Wen Xi thought. “In short, don’t be too familiar with me, and let’s not go on dates together.”

Meng Zhaozhao frowned. “Then who do you want to go on a date with?”

Wen Xi said, “Let’s see what the script says. Anyway, we both asked for the script. If we act according to the script, we can definitely do it! But we also need to develop our feelings, then slowly be attracted to each other, and finally get together!”

Meng Zhaozhao said, “That’s a bit difficult.”

Wen Xi: “What’s difficult?”

Meng Zhaozhao: “Being slowly attracted.”

Wen Xi: “Are you saying you won’t be attracted to me?”

Meng Zhaozhao let out a long “mhm” and said, “I think that even if we did this ten thousand times, I would still fall in love with you at first sight.”

Wen Xi: “…”

16

Sometimes, having a girlfriend who is too good at sweet talk is also difficult.

You always want to kiss her.

17

Especially when you can’t.

18

After joining the dating show, the moments when Wen Xi wanted to kiss Meng Zhaozhao were especially frequent. She thought about how miserable she was. Her girlfriend was right next to her, yet she had to send text messages to other people and go on dates with them.

19

But Zhu Wan’er’s cooking was quite delicious.

Wen Xi started to be too happy to think of home.

20

So that night, Meng Zhaozhao crept into her room, climbed into her bed, and snuggled up to her, insisting that she clarify whether Meng Zhaozhao’s cooking was more delicious or if she herself was more delicious.

Girlfriends really are prone to being unreasonable.

Wen Xi sat up, threw her clothes aside, and rubbed her hands together. “It’s time to show my true skills!”

Meng Zhaozhao lay on her bed, watching her pull off her pants by the moonlight. Her expression was serious, as if she were conducting academic research. When Meng Zhaozhao was starting to feel shy from being watched and was about to rush her, she even pressed down on her calf. “Don’t move.”

Meng Zhaozhao clamped her legs around her and said in a low voice, “What on earth are you looking at!”

Wen Xi whispered, “I just miss you so much. I want to look a little longer.”

Meng Zhaozhao: “Looking is not as good as doing. I haven’t slept well these past few nights. Can you sleep? I can’t. Every night in bed, I think about how lonely my wife must be without me.”

Wen Xi wiped her tears. “I haven’t slept well either! You know I used to sleep during the day!”

Meng Zhaozhao: “…Hurry up and do it. I can’t wait.”

Wen Xi said excitedly, “Here I come!”

21

And then they had a great time.

22

Later, in the eyes of the audience, Wen Xi and Meng Zhaozhao were love rivals who caught each other’s eye, developed mutual feelings, and slowly got together. But more and more people came to agree with Qi Ke’s words, that the two had a strange reaction from the “first moment” they met.

The lie was exposed, yet not exposed.

Just as Meng Zhaozhao had said.

Even if it happened again ten thousand times, she would still fall in love with Wen Xi at first sight.
